Holding election in wartime would risk destroying Ukraine, says Zelenskyy

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said holding elections in Ukraine during wartime would risk splitting the country at a time when Russia is amassing ballistic missiles and considering whether to mobilise an extra 300,000 soldiers.
The Ukrainian president, responding for the first time to a demand made by the sacked former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, sharply criticised an idea that he said was impractical given Russia appeared to have no interest in a ceasefire.
“I believe that if we want to destroy the country, then during such a war we can move in the selection of elections,” Zelenskyy said in a briefing to selected journalists that was held on Saturday, but details of which were reported on Sunday.
“I believe that during such a war, elections in general are big risks. Elections right now are a tsunami for the state that will split Ukraine,” he said, adding that his plan was to end the war and preserve Ukraine as an independent state.
Elections have been suspended in Ukraine since martial law was imposed at the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia. Zelenskyy’s five-year term ended in May 2024 but there had until recently been little desire in Ukraine to hold a contest while the war continued.

How convenient. Lincoln faced election during a civil war. We had elections during WW2.

I find it rather obvious, since Russia has allowed Zelensky to live, there is so much more corruption to be found.

Is this an admission that half his people don't want to keep the war going?

Or that they don't want to keep Z going?
Good follow up question to yours.

Way more than half.
Putin should announce that they would grant a 10 day ceasefire for Ukraine to hold elections.

But neither of them were dictators

Sounds kind of dictatory

Putin is ready for an election. As long as his opponent lives in a room at the top of a tall building.

Ukraine's legislature can change the constitution if they have the votes.

Actually its not in their constitution.
Their constitution states that they cant have an election while under martial law. Their parliament could end it, or pause it if they wanted.

No. Changing your constitution to how you see fit is the kind of thing that corrupt countries like Russia does.

Yes. So if you want Ukraine to win then there shouldn’t be elections. If you want Ukraine to lose to do want elections.

Having an election while showing a commitment to democracy would be highly risky in Ukraine's case. He has invaders still engaged in military operations on his own soil, not to mention they are bombing Kyiv and other cities on a regular basis.
In the US Civil War leading up to the election, you did not have Confederates on Union soil and really by that time, Washington was not under threat militarily.....they were being bled by Grant and Sherman.....New York wasn't under threat, Philadelphia was not under threat and Chicago was not under threat.

In the thread about the constitutionality of designating Islam as a political movement, some took offense to my suggestion that all rules tend to get thrown out in an existential crisis.
But they do, and if Washington had been under threat at that time or in 1944, we probably would have suspended the rules. We certainly did when putting citizens of Japanese origin in concentration camps.

Yeh your arse would be frickin gone ……

Didn’t he also ban the Russian Orthodox Church? Which was the largest one. Not surprising given Zelenskyy is Jewish.
