High schools have fishing teams but do not have hunting teams. How is that allowed?

My son is a hunter. He even hunts fish with a bow!! He prefers to be called Hunter.
Recently "Hunter" has been extremely agitated with the nonsense of local high schools participating in the sport of fishing. He has begged and pleaded with school officials to promote the art of hunting by offering a sport of hunting league. His pleadings are falling on deaf ears.
Now he wants a lawyer. I am so proud of my son.

I was a senior in HS in 1989. We dove hunted alot back then. I didn't have any classes after 1pm. So during the week I brought my camo and shotgun to school in my truck. I changed into my camo in the gym locker room. IF a kid tried that today the school would call out the FBI HRT team.

I've always said that if you want to reduce accidental gun deaths, then firearm safety should be a required course in school. Every year!

Hunter is not able to access at his age. Hunter says his pain is real and swears many others feel the very same way.
Hunter believes a class action will solve their problem. I am so proud of my son.

Hunting is not exactly a competitive sport. And it seems like a good way for a kid to get shot. Our schools can't even teach kids math, science, and English. I certainly wouldn't want them coordinating a hunting competition where shotguns or rifles are involved.

Hard to have a hunting team in places that are gun free zones like schools or Mar a Lago

absolutely it's a liability issue.
the schools my sons graduated from wouldn't officially sponsor a fishing team for the same reason.
they were allowed to form their own club and participate in the High School tournaments, they just couldn't be attached to the school in any way.
School claims it was due to insurance and liability, but the official league (or whatever it's called) required all boats to carry $1mil liability policy to be allowed to enter, and the league itself added an additional $1mil liability policy for each boat.

It probably would never happen.
But can you imagine what the personal liability insurance premiums for the sponsors would be? The school district would likely self insure. But the issue of liability would be the main reason why I think schools would be a hard no on this.

I'm not surprised. None of those policies would keep the school from getting sued. The risk isn't so much that a plaintiff might win millions...it's the cost of having to defend yourself, and the cost of a possible settlement.
Parents of the deceased would no doubt sue everyone associated with the case. in any way.

Only a few states have the javelin in high school.
The hammer is even more dangerous. From what I found, Rhode Island is the only state that has it in high school track.

I know your post is in jest but I am betting the fishing teams are a club sport at the high school and not governed by the athletic association in your state... In other words, the "club" is developed and funded through donations and sponsorships and has meetings during club functions for the school...
I am not aware of competitive hunting but shooting clubs are available for high schools:
Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation:
SCTP- skeet, sporting clays and trap.
SASP- action / precision shooting
SPP- pistol shooting
4H- all forms of shooting from archery to precision to clays (most schools already have 4H active.
JROTC - usually has a precision air rifle or small bore rifle team.
So, the opportunities are there and it really isn't that hard to get a team started...
