Interesting article I saw linked on Facebook. I remember at Vanderbilt there was always tension between Africans and African Americans because the Africans A) mostly came from professional families (mostly doctors) B) didn't carry any historical baggage.

This is why I laugh that so many people actually consider Obama to be African-American.

His ancestors were not American slaves.

One of the reasons the term African-American exists is because people cannot trace a specific country they are from, due to slavery and breeding of slaves.

Obama is a Kenyan-American.

His dad was African and his mom American I guess so it kinda makes sense to call him African American.

Well, he certainly is a man of many hats, but he is of African decent and American. Certainly African American is not a totally inaccurate term.

However it is one that has largely been used to describe black people whose ancestors were brought to this country through slavery. Recent African immigrants identify with their country of origin, and thus I could see how that term could be considered inaccurate for them.

You don't call Canadaians or Mexicans Americans just because they are from the same continent.

are scared to call someone "black", so they need to say something else more PC sounding instead.

Well if you are white you are also probably Roman.

This wasn't really my point. Do you rather I use the Anthropology term negroid? That wouldn't be totally accurate either as his mom is a Caucasian.

Ask a cab driver fresh from Nigeria what he thinks of American blacks. Makes TIGERLEE look like Mother Teresa.

Rome wasn't an ethnic group, it was a political entity, FWIW. A Roman citizen could have been a northern European, a middle easterner, or an African, with any combination of eye and skin color associated with those ethnicities.

He is a mulato. I don´t know if that is PC, however.
