At my school, there is no tension really between Africans and "African-Americans"( Man i hate that term.) In high school I had a friend who was from Nigeria. He was one of the most well-spoken intelligent people I have ever known in my life. But he wasnt condescending or anything like that. He was the type of person to finish the classwork in 5 minutes, and spent the rest of the time helping the rest of the class. This man made a 2100 on the SAT, and was legit pissed off at himself for fricking around so much and not doing better on the test. While I was proud of my 1500, he was beating himself up over a 2100
The most amazing thing about him was that he was a true student-athlete. He was an absolute manimal on the football field. And he still played soccer in the spring season.
He eventually became valedictorian easily went to Cornell University on a full scholarship. He told me stories of how he grew up in Africa. Many nights they would have no food to eat. They had to wear a lot of the same clothes over and over again, other sad stuff like that. But he also told stories of how he had a pet lion and they would go searching in the jungle for elephants to eat, so I never knew which of his stories were real and which were fake But regardless, he remains one of the most closest friends and most inspiring person I know.

Yeah, I assumed the other guy was a Spanish language speaker. Mulato is correct in Spanish, and in fact, is the original word (actually I believe the word is Portuguese in origin).

Back to the original topic...
I think a lot of it is the attitude of immigrant families, and their lack of a sense of entitlement.
From the linked article:
You see this in immigrant families from other areas as well (most notably, Asia & India, but some countries in the Middle East as well).

I think that pretty much explains the immigrant hustle: Parents don’t allow their children to take for granted the opportunities they’re afforded in America.

Ok... so wait, I am confused. You mean you can have "white privilege" if you aren't white but are a first generation immigrant regardless of color?
Someone needs to post a .PDF link to the white privilege handbook. My copy seems to be outdated.
Just kidding. I recently had a discussion with a number of people both black and white telling me about how privileged I am by being white. I told them I never had ANYTHING I didn't work very hard for.
Someone even posted a "study" done by someone that proved discrimination against those with "black" sounding names.
I am sure every successful person being referenced in this article has a black sounding name. My question is why isn't it holding them back?
I think the answer is that "white privilege" or any privilege looks a lot like hard work. If you work hard enough there aren't enough racists or assholes to block your path. You will be successful.
Life is hard for everyone...

The fact that these immigrants are coming from a higher socio-economic class or a culture in which achievement is not only applauded, but expected, has a much greater significance to their success as to black Americans than race.

I know many that dont come from high socio-economic class. Many that came here as janitors, cab drivers, etc.
Their children are told to work hard and let the idiots on "da street, keep it real"

This effectively discounts skin color as a deciding factor in success.
I work for a very large company and have done interviews for years. Guess what? No one cares what color you are. We only care if you have the skills that we need.

Nobody said you didn't work hard. The fact is, if you are black, you are a lot more likely to be born in poverty. Or if you are black, you are a lot more likely to grow up in a single parent household. Nobody is saying you didn't have to work hard. Or that life came easy. Many times black people have to work that much harder just because there may be so many people trying to hold them back.

Unfortunately, that is not true for everyone. There are some people out there who definitely still cares.

The only thing crowding the black Americans are the black Americans sense of entitlement and urban culture.

Agree.
Capitalism has done more to quell racism than any singular social program.
The United States is by far the least racist country in the world and capitalism is the reason.
Greed > hatred.

Says who? If you are black how do you know the difference between a racist and an a-hole?
I might deal with the same thing you do on a daily basis. Guess what I deal with assholes. You might call the same behavior racism. How do you know the difference? Seriously...
All I am saying is to talk to me you would see a "good ole boy". If there is rampant racism I should be witnessing it. I hate to say it but I'm not. I literally can't remember the last time I saw something and said wow that's racist.

What year did you graduate from Vanderbilt? I'm trying to recall some Africans.

It's not just rampant racism. It's the little things that you may not even notice
