bro in law is giving me shite about not wearing a mask. Says it's no different than PPE in a plant. Says the numbers are up bc people weren't wearing masks.
Ask him to be specific on how effective masks are.

Cloth face coverings are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the cloth face covering coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This is called source control. This recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows cloth face coverings reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of cloth face coverings is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to maintain.

He says the proof is that the number of cases have gone up with the increase of people going to bars/social gathering without masks, etc

This isn’t political and isn’t debatable. The faster a country made masks mandatory the fewer deaths they’ve had.

If masks are so protective, then why weren’t they mandated nationwide back in March?
If masks aren't that protective, why did dentists/doctors wear them before Covid?

Are masks not something they used to mitigate the spread?

He is correct about this. For it to work it has to be designed for the hazard, it has to fit probably and it has be used correctly.

I'm not sick, though. If I was sick, I just wouldn't go out. I suppose if I was sick and I HAD to go out (doctor, pharmacy, etc.), I would voluntarily wear a mask.
But in every other circumstances it is bullshite virtue signalling nonsense.

So, we should just mandate masks and open everything up, then?
You on board, baw?

The virus can spread without you know you have it.

President wore a mask today. If he didn’t act like it was a personal attack on him all his cult followers would not have their panty’s in a wad.

It’s amazing... this far into to the pandemic and some people are still so uninformed on COVID.

"Muh asymptomatic spread" - another fairy tale.
I guess Time is a far right wing science denying site?

Tell your brother in law that you agree in some respects but that getting out and standing up for equality by speaking truth to power was worth it. Then ask why he’s a racist.

Poor attempt at a gotcha.
It’s the timing of the mask mandate in response to cases spiking that’s in question, not their effectiveness at reducing the transmission of COVID-19.

He just changed his argument from masks work to masks make people feel better

Wearing a mask is the same thing as stockpiling toilet paper. It will have almost no effect if any but people need to have the delusion of being in control and being proactive. The science is actually pretty compelling...masks worth good in conjunction with social distancing. A mask alone is nearly worthless. But if it makes people feel like they have some control I have no problem with that....but I am certain beyond doubt they will soon come to the conclusion that a mask by itself is all that is needed and will forego staying at home. We should have never shut down in the first place because anyone with any sense knew it was not sustainable....but usually when you do something half assed like shutting down and not being committed to doing so for years the end result is going to be half assed....
