Capital Weather
@capitalweather

9:02pm: Some light to occasionally moderate rain, esp around I95 and east, next hour or two for fireworks. Risk of dangerous weather has diminished except for parts of southern MD next half hour.

Showers helping keep air mixed as pollutants rise, but winds decrease and smoke increases with time.

Yeah, that doesn’t look pretty good. My signal is still very sketchy, but I got the AccuWeather radar for a bit and it looks like it should be pretty cleared out by 10:00.

Not so CSB. As soon as I came up the steps from the metro, they were announcing the evacuation.

ETA: I’m currently up underneath the Department of Energy. Big wide open space with the building over us.

I remember an old S&L whose motto was “Thrift Makes Men Independent”. I guess our new motto should be “Beer Makes Men Free!”

Welp. I never made it in. When they reopened I was part of a crowd of thousands of people moving toward the mall. Slow going, but progress was definitely being made, all the way up until I was about 30 or so yards back from the gate. This was not a single file line though it was a mob of people. I’d say in that 30 or so yards there were easily a couple of thousand people ahead of me.

Once I got to that point, there was no more moving forward. Started to worry that we might not make it in. People were starting to filter out from up front, pretty frustrated. One guy that was leaving said that they never let anyone back in. Whether that was true at our gate or not, I don’t know, but clearly people were getting in from other gates because the Mall looks pretty full in the videos I’ve seen.

I can’t complain too much since I was late arriving anyway. I definitely feel for the people who were out there for hours and lost their good spots and then weren’t even able to get back in. That had to really suck.

Nope. Never got in at all. The fireworks were absolutely amazing. My view of them was mostly obstructed by trees though.

Best photo I took of the night.

Got some decent video but nothing really worth putting on YouTube or anything to post it here.

Couple of screenshots from the videos I shot. The first one is from where I got stuck in line and was standing when the fireworks started.

And then after I had made my way out and was working my way back to the metro station. This was probably the best vantage point I had all night and it was blocked on the sides by buildings.
