Interesting comments and I will add something I haven't seen. I suspect you have some confirmation bias going on. The poor kids who leave are engaging in an entrepreneurial act by striking out on their own. You don't see them bc they left and may not be poor wherever they are. The ones who stay are likely more risk averse.
