Possibly. But if you are desperate enough, you can always hitchhike.

Many young black men either die very young or end up in prison. I'd say that's pretty dire.

Yeah but it's always been this way. It seems to be a successful strategy for people to escape an impoverished area.

maybe it's hard to see how dire it really is when it's all you know. I'm just guessing here. I ran for the hills first shot and didn't look back.

We've all heard the story of immigrants who showed up with only the money in their pockets and yet made it.
Sometimes you have to take a chance.

Really man.
And staying isn't lucrative.
There will always be a list of reasons/excuses why people don't do something to improve their lot. In the end, doing nothing is the worst possible strategy

Mine came over like this during the potato famine but no one starves in this country anymore. It's not that hard to eek out a living here doing not much at all. Until that changes you just aren't going to see large numbers of people with one-way tickets to foreign countries.

I've had the good fortune to travel to almost every state in the continental U.S., and much more later in life. And when I'm hiking a new trail, or taking a picture of some new scenic wonder, I often reflect on the fact that many Americans never leave their home states. This makes me sad.
It's not like there are guards at the state borders. Go somewhere!

But you are illustrating my point. If you have to eek out an existence, why not at least enjoy the view?

Most people, regardless of financial situation, rarely leave for somewhere else.
Something like 90% of Americans live and die within 100 miles of where they grew up.
People in general are afraid of change, afraid of failure.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I've lived in 7 states and 4 countries. I'm just giving you my guess as to why some never leave.

that's depressing if it's even close to being accurate.

I will never understand people (rich or poor) who can grow up, live, and die in the same town.

I remember seeing it posted except, even more depressingly, I think it was within 100 miles of where they're born.

If all the poor people left Louisiana the state would lose half its population.
Posted on 3/28/18 at 4:54 pm to Ralph_Wiggum
you might be low-balling with only half.

My dad has only been to two other states besides Louisiana and has no desire to do so. I don't understand this.

My wife's family mostly live in a tiny little town in northern alabama that the family practically owns. They aren't poor by any means, but I still can't imagine not seeing the world. Her grandfather traveled the world in the army right after WW2, and he said all he ever wanted to do was come home.
Different strokes I guess.
