Has the government explained why they needed to shoot the balloon down over the ocean?

And since it was so important to do so, WHY THEY DIDN’T SHOOT IT DOWN WHEN IT ENTERED OUR AIRSPACE???

They got confused and shot it down over the wrong ocean. Should have been shot down over the Aleutian Islands.

Not sure if they ever explained this decision. But it's typical of that Chinese Fire Drill (pun intended), Joe Biden and his pals are running up there in Washington, D.C.
I heard one report (unsubstantiated) the reason was the DOD was afraid the balloon would fall and hit somebody on 'his whittle head'. Plugs tried playing CYA by insisting he ordered the thing shot down last Wednesday. Who knows what the real story is with this bunch?
To be honest, this smells like Mark Milley had a hand in this. Like maybe they strung this thing out as a desperate effort to divert attention from the Hunter - ChiCom - Big Guy fiasco. Now they're saying - Donald Trump did it. The Swamp is really terrified of another Trump Presidency.
Hopefully that GOP hearing scheduled for next week will cast some light on this debacle (aka balloongate, or "How I watched a Chinese Spy Balloon disappear like a fart in the wind"),

If they shot it down over land there was a possibility it could land on some place where Biden had top secret documents stashed.

Or it contained yet another stash of Joe Biden classified documents and we couldn’t let it crash on land where it could have spread reams of classified documents across the countryside. We had to dispose of the at the bottom of the ocean.
Or the balloon was carrying yet another Hunter Biden laptop for a special delivery to Hunter. Unfortunately, it landed in the ocean so it’s secrets would be lost at the bottom of the ocean instead of being leaked on Fox.

Any bio weapon would have been carried across the USA via the jet stream. Only reason I can think of.

The only reason I can't fathom is that they wanted to drop in the water to minimize damage to the equipment upon impact, for they same reason we dropped our space capsules in the ocean.
