Harvard: guns were used for self defense in less than 1% of crimes

The latest data show that people use guns for self-defense only rarely. According to a Harvard University analysis of figures from the National Crime Victimization Survey, people defended themselves with a gun in nearly 0.9 percent of crimes from 2007 to 2011.
David Hemenway, who led the Harvard research, argues that the risks of owning a gun outweigh the benefits of having one in the rare case where you might need to defend yourself.
"The average person ... has basically no chance in their lifetime ever to use a gun in self-defense," he tells Here & Now's Robin Young. "But ... every day, they have a chance to use the gun inappropriately. They have a chance, they get angry. They get scared."

Even if someone wanted to use a gun in self-defense, they probably wouldn't be very successful, says Mike Weisser, firearms instructor and author of the blog "Mike The Gun Guy." He says many people who carry a gun aren't properly trained to use it in this way, and there is no performance validation standard for police officers.
"If we don't even have a minimum standard, not for training, but for performance validation for our law enforcement," he says, "how in God's name is anybody going to say, 'Well, just because you have a gun in your pocket, you know how to use it in self-defense?' You don't."

I do think that gun ownership should have required training.

How often were police present to act as defense against crimes?

I didn’t click the link, but I have many questions about the study the article is based on.

I'm confused. Is self defense a crime?
Posted on 4/14/18 at 3:22 am to TJGator1215
I didn't see anything about the crimes that didn't happen because the targeted victim brandished a weapon. That would be a very important stat.
But I do agree that classes should be taken.

Seems like ample fodder to establish negligence in police departments where they shoot people without justification

Well that isn't biased at all. Drivel.

The media loves to report on crimes committed with guns – but seldom when they’re used in self defense.
Even when the media does report on self-defensive gun usage, they create an absurd standard to make self-defense cases appear minuscule. In the New York Times, columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote, “It is true that guns are occasionally used to stop violence. But contrary to what the National Rifle Association suggests, this is rare. One study by the Violence Policy Center found that in 2012 there were 259 justifiable homicides by a private citizen using a firearm.”
quote:
He does realize that you can use a gun in self-defense without killing a person, correct? There are roughly 10,000 firearm homicides per year, but over 100,000 people shot every year, so one death per ten people actually shot. And, in most cases, brandishing a firearm alone is enough to do the trick. According to one study published in the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology in 1995, only 8% of people who use a gun for defense “report wounding an adversary.”
The purpose of owning a firearm isn’t to kill criminals – it’s to deter them. And how much of a deterrent are they? Here’s a sampling of the studies available, and what they’ve found:
quote:
The aforementioned 1995 paper was based on a survey of 4,977 households, and found that at least 0.5% of households over the previous five years had members who had used a gun for defense during a situation in which they thought someone “almost certainly would have been killed” if they “had not used a gun for protection.” Applied to the U.S. population using standard scientific methods, this amounts to at least 162,000 saved lives per year, excluding all “military service, police work, or work as a security guard.” This is obviously an absurdly high figure, but even if ten percent of those who were “certain they would’ve been killed” are correct, the number of lives saved by guns outnumbers the number of homicides committed with them.
quote:
A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.

It says more about the authors of the study than anything else.

Hope Harvard did their study better than NPR did reporting it.
First 1% of what crimes??
Attempted murder, rape, assault, car jacking? Or are they including theft, shoplifting, jaywalking.
Does one rarely need a gun? How many times does a stewardess show off the personal flotation devices compared to the times they are used? Surely they are more rarely used than a gun, but every passenger on every flight has one!
What benefits did ole Davy boy calculate? Surely the risk of owning a backyard swimming pool outweigh the benefits by his logic. Drowning versus not drowning? But how about fun and healthy exorcise? Guns provide fun, exorcise, protection, and peace of mind.
Wow, what dribble! The average person... hammer, knife, hatchet, rat poison, baseball bat... everyday has the opportunity to use them inappropriately. What a dumb arse.
I could go on because the stupidity in these few paragraphs are legion.

The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

I guess 1-in-10 might seem rare, unless you are the "1".

There have been guns around me, literally my entire life. Not one time have they ever harmed me nor anyone else for that matter.

Do you also think there should be training to exercise your other rights as well?
