It’s just parliamentary bullshite. They have to vote against it because they’re going to fundraise for being against it. The confirmation process has gotten ridiculous like everything else.

It used to be that, generally speaking, POTUS nominees were easy confirmed if they were qualified for the position and weren’t involved in some sort of bribery or similar scandal. The Senates role is “advise and consent” not “choose the nominee”. It was understood in previous eras that the executive should be given wide latitude on cabinet appointments—they won the election.

But we’ve gotten away from that and now everything is party lines unless they are in the Senate club. Like everything else that’s gone wrong with Congress, we’re worse off for it.

I have no problem with POTUS getting a rubber stamp for executive nominations. Either party. It’s their executive branch to run. Give them the rope.
