American Spectator did, too.

I just wish they would get the story right - St. George didn't "secede" from anything.

Just as the leftist slant from the Daily Mail saying "Wealthy White Residents separate from poor black Baton Rouge" was wrong, this headline is equally as wrong.

Literally all that has happened is the majority of the people living in a defined area within East Baton Rouge Parish, but outside the city limits of Baton Rouge, decided the wanted to incorporate the area into it's own distinct city.

No one seceded from Baton Rouge.

It is a completely lazy and intentional misleading narrative regardless of what side of the debate or political spectrum you fall on.

Legally I’m sure you’re correct.

I think that was intentional on their part however to try and build the narrative that we the people have choice and can resist tyrannical governments.

Re Texas succession efforts etc…

There was no succession however Baton Rouge was being tyrannical in trying to block the St George self incorporation.

I’m guessing because they wanted to eventually expand their own city limits and incorporate them into BR instead. Or otherwise somehow keep their grimy hands onto the resources of the parish residents.

You do know the city of Baton Rouge literally had DECADES to expand the city limits in to what is now the "St. George" area, but chose not to do so.

Why? Two reasons:

1. For most of it's history the area now in "St. George" was the rural outskirts outside the city of Baton Rouge. Even as late as the 1980's it was relatively sparsely populated. Because of that, the city of BR didn't really care enough to try to annex that additional land into the city limits.

2. However, over the last 30+ years the area has continued to become more and more populated. BR could have annexed more of the area at any time, but didn't for ONE big reason....the people in the area were paying takes partially being used to fund public services strictly performed within the city of BR. Why would BR turn down that mailbox money? It was a great deal.

And the irony is the people within area of St. George were ok with that crappy deal as long as they could get their own school system instead of having to rely on a broken EBR school system that was continuing to decline. The powers that be in BR told those folks to "F-off! Get your own city if you want your own schools"...so they did!

But why does it matter? Either way the action stands for freedom of self-determination and self-government. The people of St. George decided to create their own political entity to govern their fates. If they were part of the city of Baton Rouge and were disgusted with the city's administration, why shouldn't the majority of a defined area be able to do the same and form their own corporate entity.

New Orleanians disgusted with Mayor Shrek and the City Council should be able to secede if the government persists in ignoring their idea of good government and the majority of a defined area (think Uptown/Lakeview) decide to form their own government or join with an already better run government (Jeff Parish--yes Uptown originally was part of Jefferson Parish before Orleans annexed it).

Secession is a charged word, but the governing concept is the same.

That the people living in the area "seceded" from the City of Baton Rouge. You can't secede from something you were never a part of. All that has happened is the people living in this unincorporated area of the parish have decided they want to incorporate into their own city.

Even the pro St. George papers can't get the facts right. St. George didn't secede from anything.

This is pretty disingenuous. Annexation would have changed the racial makeup of the city, and would have very likely been struck down as it would have diluted minority voting power.

That was a major reason, and probably the biggest reason there were not annexations of additional neighborhoods.

I guess with personal no dog in the fight, my question is "How will this affect LSU and its surrounds?" Superficially, it seems what is good for St George, could be bad for LSU.

Below is the first sentence from a FOX News article.

Residents in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, have finally won a legal battle to create a new town called St. George.

If Baton Rouge would have treated them fairly this would have never happened. Tax money flowed out and they got little in return.

ETA I seriously doubt that BR has great "concern" for how this impacts their schools. More concern that they are loosing a cash cow for their own benefits.

Yeah. Broom’s publicist and even the local papers painted it as an movement to secede back in 2019. It was dishonest and it stuck.

How often do you think the media is wrong or intentionally misleading on topics you don’t know well enough to challenge them on?
