well the title says it all, what needs to be done so basic simple accountability applies to all government workers so you simply do your job or you get fired?

i think step one is making it illegal for government employees to have a union. you work for the US government so you cant go on strike or sue them for grievances, therefore there is no justifiable excuse to have a union

if you are allowing someone else to, or if you are found doing non work related stuff on the clock, then you get fired

if you are allowing someone else to, or if you are found doing political related stuff on the clock, then you get fired

if you are allowing someone else to, or if you are found using you position and security clearance access to illegally obtain information for political related stuff on the clock and you go to jail

so what needs to be done to fix this issue?

You fire them... They can be fired but someone has to be willing to complete the process to fire them...

Cant do it without cause.

The president signed and EO to make the process go a little more quickly.

A government agency simply can not function, this will always be the case. Check out the Washington Monument syndrome.

It’s Impossible. My wife works for the VA in New Orleans. She was in private industry all her life and has been there four years now.

Every single week she tells me stories of complete incompetence, waste, theft and basically just the government mentality.

They’ve caught multiple people stealing, have them on video and everything, a few of them several times. Some workers walking around loaded all day every day. And none of them are ever fired.

It’s really sickening, especially when you know it goes on at every single department in the government.

It's extremely difficult. The protection many of these people have is unbelievable.

Start by reducing the size of the federal government.
Cut in half.

If you can’t fire them can you eliminate jobs and positions?

No one will be missed.

Government workers can be fired. This is a myth that they cannot.

Yep. I have family who work for the Feds. I hear the same things.

Employees know they can do “just enough” to keep their jobs. The system is broke.

MASSIVE staff reductions in the form of not replacing retirees, etc.

If you can't fire people, you certainly can refuse to replace the ones that do leave.

isnt there something that they can do to allow firing "at will" if they arent doing their job or found guilty of wrong doing?

it has to be more then just willing blindness to ignore it

cant they make supervisors pay fines and/or lose their jobs if they fail to ensure workers under them are doing their jobs properly and without bias?

there has to be a way to hold people accountable for what they do or dont do

Yikes. they are human beings.. you realize that, right? If an airman wants to stop by and pick up a soda on the way back from a meeting.. who the frick cares?

That's not what he's talking about and you know it. A better example would be if a government employee checks into his nothing job in the morning, says he's going to a meeting but instead goes to work a part-time job at another location, and then reports back to his government job in the afternoon.

I have worked for both private and government. I can say that the problems with the government workers are the same as with private industry. Every business or government agency has had employees. You act as if these problems are only within the government.

When I worked for the state I fired 4 civil service employees. It was not that hard. I just had to document the lack of performance, attempts to train, tardiness, and attempts of corrective action.

All four of these guys were long time state employees who did not have the requisite knowledge for their jobs.

I have fired people in the corporate world as well and the process in government wasn't any harder because of the documentation I kept. I could not have fired these guys in the private sector without similar documentation.

This is not unique to public sector jobs.
