re: Government bailouts: Why not for student loans?

the student loan debate payback debate never makes any sense
even in its most basic form (give up to $X of relief to all outstanding government backed student loans) … what about people graduating next semester and in the future? is it relief in perpetuity? it never makes any sense other than a certain time frame of graduates hit the lottery that those before or after don’t receive
it’s similar to the Dreamers/granting citizenship to illegals. we can maybe entertain it, but only once we have strict policies in place to stop the flow and get welfare state reformed. otherwise we just grant citizenship which just encourages more illegals to rush over here
we can’t even begin to think of “forgiving” loans without a reform of college education costs and the ease of getting these loans. fix the current problem (higher education costs and loans for worthless degrees)… “forgiving” student loan debt without anything else just encourages students to take even more debt because they will just take the risk they won’t have to pay it back

Why not federally backed home loans instead?

You honestly borrow, you honestly pay it back.....
It is called RESPONSIBILITY.

US government has given bailouts to Airlines, Automakers, corporate banks, etc.
While those bailouts are terrible, they are given to GDP contributing industries. Many had to pay them back as well. Bailing out people who majored in gender studies and philosophy and now are shocked they can’t pay 200k loans is very different.
The only way I would ever agree to bailout the student loans would be to end all government backed student loans.

If you can't pay your student loans we'll forgive the loans and you'll lose your right to vote until you repay your loans

They should close corporate tax loopholes and use that money for student loan bailout ..,then stop backing student loans and let students deal directly with banks like they used to do. And have a free community college degree/ technical skills college for those who are income restricted

They should close corporate tax loopholes
So raise taxes and as a result the cost of goods and services.

So cutoff many lower income people from access to college

So raise taxes, to fund this second class job training program for the poors who can’t go to college anymore.

If you take out a loan for a shitty degree, why should other taxpayers pay the cost?

The government does NOT pay for anything.

bunch of butthurt loan payers ITT. Student loans should be canceled and the entire system be reworked

Nothing better than using stupidity to justify MORE stupidity.
Try an argument of merit next time.

Again why not free up billions in student loan debt, to help stimulate the economy?

Every borrower took the money. They should pay it back.
It’s a glaring symptom of cultural rot that returning what you took has become controversial.

I paid off my six figure student loan debt, so will the gov now pay off the mortgage on my vacation home?

I’m against any bailout for anyone. Bailing out the idiots who took out 150k in student loans for a worthless degree deserve to be enslaved by that debt.
They are dead weight. Basically worthless to society. Lack the intellectual horsepower to attain a valuable degree. Lack the ability/intelligence required for a good paying blue collar job = dead weight

Anything given by the government must first be taken from taxpaying Americans.
