That kind of stuff happens in a representative democracy. You elect people to make decisions. If this is a big issue that the people truly want overwhelmingly, candidates will campaign on the idea and can change it back.

There was a precedent of allowing the people to vote directly on this issue and it was broken for arbitrary reasons.
