This is seriously messed up.

Look, these people can literally control the world via blackmail. Want to run for office? Hope Google doesn't have dirt.

We need new laws that govern this....

quote:

The full statement from a Google spokesperson regarding this oversight reads as follows, "The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs. That was an error on our part ... The microphone has never been on, and is only activated when users specifically enable the option. Security systems often use microphones to provide features that rely on sound sensing. We included the mic on the device so that we can potentially offer additional features to our users in the future, such as the ability to detect broken glass."

With a time/location stamp AND association with one or more of your accounts.

The good news is - they're collecting SO MUCH information that, just like the information age we're living in now, it is not the raw collection that provides the challenge, it's the filter to get what you want, when you want it.

I would agree with this. "Manufacturers or Companies cannot store, sell, or keep recorded audio or visual media gained from any privately purchased item for any length of time."

its not like these idiots were not all told up front about this by smart people who knew it was literally self purchased and installed surveillance devices and told everyone who would listen that thats what it was.

but stupid people saw commercials where it answers all my stupid questions and makes shopping lists for me so i want one

Europe has harsher laws than the USA on this. That's sad!

The tech in itself is great. What the people who build it have been proven to do is what needs oversight.

you can just assume that if you have a google or apple product in your home/possession, it has the ability to rat you out eventually.

Funny thing is so many idiots post the illegal stuff they do to social media already anyway. You'll see when a cop finds out a suspect's name the first thing they do is go to their FB/IG account. The indictment for that 69 moron was riddled with stuff from his own Instagram account

TD is horrible about showing me how connected all of this stuff is. I was talking to a friend about his son who suffers from complications from a stroke. Next time I start browsing here there are banner ads for some weird looking stroke remedy glove thing.

They are listening at all times. all you can really hope is the audio files are locked away being studied by top men. or bots looking to run pertinent banner ads which im strangely comfortable with for some reason. or that the sheer volume of data is too much to go through and that somehow its all anonymous (lol).

Do not want a mic in your house? Do not buy a mic and put it in your house.

Installing a mic in a device and not disclosing its presence in the product? THAT is problematic.

Privacy is overrated. The problem isn't being recorded it's the criminalization of stupid shite like smoking weed.

I find it hilarious when people worry about being listened to or watched.. but their credit/debit cards reveal far more about them
