I, for one, welcome the continued surveillance of our government overlords -

Last Minute Deal To Extend FISA 702

quote:

After its midnight deadline, the Senate voted early Saturday to reauthorize a key U.S. surveillance law

I’m sure this will get cleared up -

quote:

In the past year, U.S. officials have revealed a series of abuses and mistakes by FBI analysts in improperly querying the intelligence repository for information about Americans

60-34, which means GOP helped with cloture and passage

The opportunity was in 2018 when the GOP controlled the legislative and executive branch, yet nothing was done.

That was when Trump himself signed the FISA renewal.

Was that the same timeframe that the FBI and Education Department and CIA and them should’ve been disbanded? And the President should’ve erased that national debt? I can’t believe we didn’t do that shite.

That y’all are so caught up in the blame game and the bashing game that you take the most direct route to it and ignore everything else. If I asked you to come up with 3 possible arguments in favor of keeping FISA around, as annoying as that exercise would be, could you do it? Have you explored that side of the argument, just to make sure you haven’t missed anything important that you wouldn’t have otherwise considered? Has anyone amongst us??

Personally, I see no problem with this. If you aren't doing anything wrong by today's standards (or standards that are put in place in the future that make today's actions "problematic"), then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. And if you are... then good... you need to be spied on in secret.

I mean... let's be honest... the only reason Donald Trump had a problem with this is he decided to upset the status quo. Don't upset the status quo. It's the status quo for a reason... it's what people far brighter then ourselves think is good for us, there it must be, right?

Get with the program, guys!

What justification could there possibly be for warrantless secret surveillance on all American citizens all of the time?

The vote of 60-34 sends the bill to President Joe Biden, who has championed it. The legislation extends Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, for two more years.

Obviously the justification is national security, terrorist threats, etc. And I would have bought into that 20 years ago. But there is zero reason to continue to cede surveillance authority of US citizens to the government. Even if it were to stop an attack (doubtful), it’s not worth the cost.

Isn't the "blame game" what this thread is about? Isn't that the intent of the OP?

If I was paranoid and cynically suspicious, I’d probably be concerned.
