I agree with him. I'm 40 and don't think I'll ever see >20% of self driving vehicles

GM is a "reaction" company and lack the ability to look forward.
Their products are way over priced and the quality doesn't justify today's pricing of their vehicles.

GM needs a complete make over and need to start with their design teams. Chevy, Toyota and Ford had a 3-some and the new Silverado is the end result.

These plants build sedans and small cars, the market has moved away from them. People want trucks and SUVs.

This is true for American "non-luxury" and sedan models that are largely front wheel drive only. They're just not enjoyable to drive and usually very average on the appearance side.

But then you look at sales on Challengers, Chargers, Mustangs, Camaros, etc and they're actually fairly strong. That's because they're RWD, have ties to older models, and are generally more fun to drive. Driving should be an "experience" and those cars actually make it one.

The RWD luxury saloon market is still going strong as well, and that's because those manufacturers have largely realized what appeals to Americans - 300+ HP rear wheel drive beasts with stiff suspensions and all sorts of sporty/track features. Those cars are an "experience" to drive and not just some soft plastic biscuit with wheels.

Honda and Toyota have done insanely good jobs with the styling on their popular sedan models - so much so that it makes up for the fact that they're FWD. The interiors have a sporty appeal to them and big, chunky steering wheels; they have sport modes, sporty wheels, and moderately strong engines. Those will appeal to the "in-betweeners" that want a sporty vehicle that's also practical.

TL;DR - the basic, unappealing plastic FWD sedan is what killed GM and Ford's car business, not anyone or anything else. The G8 almost single-handedly saved Pontiac from going under because it was a RWD sport saloon with a decent sized engine - unfortunately GM didn't learn. The Charger and Challenger DID save Dodge. Now GM is "angling for the future" because they don't think people want cars anymore. How stupid can they be?

I’m on my 3rd Chevy Suburban in 20 years and I’ve put close to a 700,000 miles on them with almost no problems. My 2011 has never been in the shop. It just keeps running and running. I can’t imagine a better vehicle. I did buy a 2013 Malibu but my wife didn’t like it because it didn’t have any seat heaters. Go figure. GM makes GREAT large SUVs.

8 years until they are totally functional

because it was "10 years" 2 years ago

Sure, they will all be able to know who merges first, who changes lanes first, who has the right of way, etc. and no one will ever disagree with the assessment

Some jobs don't deserve to come back. Like those at a poorly run union company that depends on government bailouts.

Obama isn't here to save them anymore!

Taxpayers, including GM's own workers, bailed their company out to save those jobs, and the workers get shafted & laid off anyway.
I get that people aren't buying sedans like they used too, but that is no reason to not shift production to trucks/SUVs in these areas.
And as the frickers do this, their stock rises.
Same story as always for this part of the country. Things will never be as they once were here, once they take what's left of the factories there aint nothing left

Trump never said he's bringing every single job back. Some companies are too bloated. You can blame unions.

I get being pissed about the bailouts, but saying that its ok that those people's jobs are gonna be gone because of it, that's really shitty by you

But the New Yorker says that we should give Bush credit for that. Hmmmmm
You should always think twice when quoting the "New Yorker". The piece would have a point if the LOANs they mention were the only bailout that happened. The crappy piece leaves out the bankruptcy treatment, and financial subsidiary bailouts.

Gm makes crap cars no doubt. Still, Trump looks foolish saying they better replace it. 1 billion tariff cost cited certainly doesn't help. It's a global integrated economy despite what politicians say. Trade wars are not the answer. Smoot Hawley tariff act preceeded the depression. Get ready. trump on gm plant closure

Haven’t bought a new car since 2002. I’ve never had a problem finding good used cars 1-2 years old and I’m saving 20-30% vs new.
