A clear and concise plan

Dollar wise, these exempted items worth 50% of US imports from China.
In three days without China back down, 50% of Chinese important are saved. France at least fought for 6 weeks before surrender to Germany.
At the same time, Intel, Micro and TI exports to China are taxed @125% by Chinese.
For the past three years, China were trying to replace the chips from these companies. Trump is helping them with these tariff war.

Right on. Trump is making beautiful deals.

Most of it is equipment used to start making chips here under the chips act. Why would we want to make it harder for them to do that?

Why does govt make doing any business "harder" by this kind of crony capitalism?
Why cant the small businessman get the same kinds of protections?

Supposedly we wanted to reshore domestic production of critical industries. But now we've expemted those industries. So it's not that.
Supposedly its about bringing jobs back to the US for "main street" that have been moved over seas. But the industries we are tariffing, are all low skilled low margin than can be move around the Chinese tariff by relocating them to VN, Bagledesh, etc (many already relocated pre-covid). The administration says they want NAFTA with all those countries... So it's not that.
Supposedly it was about generating revenue... but we've exempted the most lucritive industries and exempted about 50% of all Chinese imports, and wants zero-zero everywhere else. So it's not that.
So I'm at a loss what the "strategy" is here.

The strategy is “making deals”.
Not the end result, nor the purpose, but just the activity in and of itself.

Pretty shitty negotiating.
I'm surprised LCDs aren't on the list. While people are pointing at Apple being spared, most of the electronics the automakers source from China are also covered with these exemptions.

I'm really starting to think the "refi" plan was the real plan, and now they're flailing trying to adjust

It just makes democrats look dumb and petty for freaking out about tariffs because unlike most policy that our government enacts, tariffs can be stopped or altered immediately at any time. A kind of push and pull until the perfect balance is found. On the other hand, we’re still stuck the effects of Obamacare 15 years later.
