First based on my travels (visited over 30 countries and lived in 5 besides the US) I 100% agree that the US is the most generally racially tolerant. However, it is akin to proudly displaying the first place ribbon for winning the 50 yard dash in the local Special Olympics. It doesn't mean you are fast, just faster.

When the first black family moves into a "white" neighborhood or the first white folks settle into a "black" neighborhood they will immediately become the talk of the neighbors and it isn't about celebrating their new-found diversity.

We have a long way to go and we are in a period of retrograde movement but the general trend over time is moving the right way and in the same long-term view we are leading the way, which we should strive to continue.

Having an overtly racially motivated government doesn't make a population more or less racist. I've been to South Africa. Whites and blacks, on average, don't really mind living near one another, as long as they are of similar socio-economic levels. Now, that doesn't change the fact that I've literally seen a white girl get called a trashy whore because she was walking down the street with a black man, but the socio-economic divide in SA is more relevant when it comes to the question posed in the survey.

It's partly that, but I imagine the numbers didn't look much different a decade ago. The French have hated them some Algerians for quite a while.

I really don't think this is as prevalent as you think it is, but it definitely still happens. Most people under 40 generally give zero fricks what color the family moves in, as long as they are clean cut. A white guy with neck tattoos is going to get more whispers than the black guy that works as an accountant.
