our willingness to share the tech was the driving factor, not geography re: the US v. France's ability to project power in the SCS.
Our willingness to share the tech was directly related to Australia’s location relative to China and the SCS. We share the tech and we get access to a place much closer geographically to China and the SCS. Them being western democracy and Five Eyes was a prerequisite, but an ascendant and aggressive China is the catalyst that out the two sides together. China froze out Australian wine of all things and Australia saw the power they were wielding and got serious about it.
I’d go so far to say that if Australia somehow refuses to let us park planes and missiles then we renig on the subs. At least we should.

This was what worried me.
The Aussies are being very draconian with their citizens because of the Fauci Flu.
Clearly the Biden "Administration" has no qualms allying itself with the totalitarians Down Under.
The Auzzies have put their freedoms on the barby next to the shrimps.
France has some of the most stringent covid restrictions in the world....

That’s not too bad. I’ll have some smaller commercial stuff come across my desk every now and then and I enjoy it. Not sure I’d like a full plate of it, but it’s likely not as complex and interesting as what you’re dealing with.

I just figured there was probably a way to accomplish whatever we wanted without publicly agitating one of our longstanding allies, but I'm sure you're right and this was another shining example of Biden's foreign policy expertise that I'm likely misunderstanding.
Probably, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it. France is locked into the Islamist struggle just as much as we are so they really can’t backtrack too much there. They’ll pitch a fit for awhile but it’s not like they’re going to run to Moscow or Beijing from here on out.

I’ll miss the excitement of PI but won’t miss ever having to make a call for settlement authority again.

We need to countermand Chy-na and Australia having a nuclear sub fleet is a good start. So do we really want to put Australia and our security in the hands of the frogs?
Biden is a fricktard but this was a good call.

“Welcome back," Le Drian said. “It is excellent news for all of us that America is back. It is a comeback to the values that we share, it is a comeback to the multilateralism that we built together and it is our responsibility to continue with it intensively. This is what France and the Europeans had to fight for alone for four very long years.”
Blinken basks in Biden’s post-Trump Europe glow
I guess the glow wore off...

Sometimes ally. Other times total bitch that knifes us in the back when it serves their purpose. And yet another European suck on our money and manpower to provide for their defense from a country they trade with in the billions.

Look at a map of the world. That and the fact that the Brits and Aussies are much less likely to go surrender monkey and leave our 6 uncovered.

They won in Algeria, and then decided to pull out.

When has that ever happened? Or are you referring to their 100% correct decision not to get sucked into our meritless war in Iraq.

France is the only country in NATO besides the United States that is actually capable of funding and defending itself, and that can project power abroad on its own.

We need all three of them, and this incident will not substantively impact our security agreements with France.

France is a very important ally and one that goes back to since before we were even a nation. There’s a very good reason we have bailed them out multiple times in the past.
Posted on 9/17/21 at 4:27 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
France has an actual military. Australia's force is tiny in comparison. If there was an conventional War with Russia or China I would rather depend more on France than Australia.

I’m not ready to do that. They helped us gain independence, which we are effing up.

Yep, the people who gave us the Statue of Liberty. The French get a bad wrap due to that one time, but yep this is bad.

The world is learning that Joe Xiden is a lying, cheating, backstabbing crook. Hmmm? I wonder which corrupt Republican politician needs a lucrative DOD contract in his district? You know in exchange for his support of Creepy Joe Xiden's massive tax increase bill?

I respect the French way more than Australians at this point. They’ve been brutally protesting more than any other country. Hell, I think they have more balls than we do at this point. There should have been a million people standing outside of the White House on 9/11, and the only reason I didn’t go is I couldn’t find a buddy with no kids to go with me since that situation could have definitely gotten out of control and you need someone with you. Who the frick are we to judge them at this point?
