No, they technically did not.
De Gaulle left the integrated military command structure of NATO in the 60’s. They did not leave NATO.
France has since rejoined the NATO command structure. The only thing they do differently is that Frances nuclear missile submarines are not integrated into NATO as the US and UK boomers are.

I’m all for French sovereignty. I’m not in support of France sending troops because that means WE send troops. And that also means all of NATO sends troops.
And that likely means someone (or many) get nuked. WTF is he thinking? They’re all so far up their own asses in the name of “we have to stop history from repeating itself” that they can’t see the nukes that are sure to come as a result of it. Just contain that shite over there, no need to expand it. Jesus Christ….

Why would it mean those things?
Note: I also think it would be a monumental mistake for France to commit itself on the ground in Ukraine. But their unilateral action would absolutely not obligate NATO or any NATO member to do anything at all—including in defense of France if Russia were to attack in response of France entering the war. Article V is purely defensive.

France's military has actually won more battles than any other nation on Earth. The stereotype of the "surrendering Frenchman" is a false perception based on limited historical knowledge. In other words, in the 1000+ year history of France, the French have been involved in many wars and have had much success.

The 2% requirement refers to domestic spending on each nations own military.
