Is the phrase a southern expression only? I don't think I've heard it said up North by people.

Hell, I picked some cotton not too long ago. Hope I didn’t offend anyone.

Slight thread hijack but there is a predominant black college in Huntsville Al called Oakwood College. The campus contains some farm land that is rented out to a local farmer. Several years ago the President of Oakwood College forbid the planting of cotton on any school property.

Tons of white folks in the south picked cotton. My dad as a small child was forced to pick it. He always bitched about it.

Let me summarize this. A black liberal tells us that Trump and his followers are Nazis.
A white conservative responds with, "Are you out of your cotton picking mind?"

The cotton picking comment warrants an apology, but the Nazi comparison does not?

What is wrong with that picture?

I saw a that this morning and couldn’t figure out what Fox was apologizing for when they came back from a commercial break, saw the interviews as they happened.

If the libs are so thin-skinned that ‘cotton-picking’ offends them as an adjective, they are done.

My grandfather owned land in north Alabama and grew cotton ( before he went to soybeans in the ‘70’s). I went a couple of times to pick cotton when I was 6 or 7, slung that heavy-arse sack over my shoulder and went at it with about 50-60 blacks. It was hard as hell work and I weighed out at about 15 lbs of cotton when I was done.

No one was complaining that I recall.

I didn't get the memo that we were pretending it's okay to call a black guy "cotton-picker"

It's a figure of speech that I have used my whole life and never once thought it had a damn thing to do with a black person...not once.

People are so self centered and offended so ridiculously easily by everthing. Grow a pair and get over something that happened so far in the past that it has zero bearing on your current touchy little world....nor was the comment even meant to imply anything about race. These people are stupid.
