re: Fellow Louisiana Bar Members, did you know LSBA has taken positions on 2020 Bills?

i was on teh local young lawyer's council for an appointed term and then a real term. they were shocked i left (esp before going to the main board). they told me they'd just appoint me again (since i didn't want to be on it the first time
) so i had to send an email explaining why i was leaving and wouldn't come back (basically saying it was wrong to keep the spots from new, young attorneys coming into the area)
they still bug me about running for the local board almost 10 years later

Doctors have the same problem with the AMA.
Many were miffed that the AMA endorsed Obamacare and the mutilation of healthy bodies to treat 'gender dysphoria'.
at least the AMA had a reason (getting the ACA to keep their proprietary coding)

It’s very clear which of these bill positions are being pushed heavily by the personal injury side of the Bar....Lol $$$$

Just a placeholder for later.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I knew that they took positions but I didn’t see what they were because my boys were being maniacs while I was trying to read the email.
I did see that we can do all online CLE this year. Jackpot.

The LSBA does a lot of good things for the profession and for the state population at large, but it absolutely should not be engaged in lobbying, especially not without clearly and loudly communicating this activity to all LSBA members, not just the board and officers.

See, it's just BS on top of BS. As an attorney I happen to support some of the bills which the LSBA opposes.
The LSBA doesn't care about anything other than maintaining its existence and subsidizing lunches, dinners, and vacations for officers and staff.
It's too easy to have a member-wide vote these days, even if the results are ignored. But to change the current by-laws, you'd have to get elected to the BOG or delegates, and run that whole line of traps, so maybe in a year or two it gets changed. Between that and allowing cartoon talking dogs in attorney TV commercials the LSBA has long since outlasted any need for there to be anything more than a board or commission like the LSBME to regulate people practicing law.

I have one of the legislators fired up. He's looking at ways to start the push for a voluntary bar.
Further to that point, docs just have a small board, the LSBME to regulate and disclipline. Membership in the Louisiana State Medical Society is voluntary. Same goes for CPAs, contractors, a dozen other "professions".
Why can't attorneys be handled the same way? That's where I thought they guy who sued last year messed up -- should have added equal protection as a grounds to eliminate mandatory membership in the LSBA.

Apparently, the Dems and the Plaintiff's bar control the Board of Governors.
This is news to you? When did you get sworn in, October 2019?

ABA has been pulling this shite for years. That's why I no longer belong. Bullchit that LSBA doing it since I obviously can't quit that one.

One of these days, maybe in the not too distant future, the Supreme Court is going to rule that it is unconstitutional to force attorneys to pay to be part of state bar associations.
PLEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSEEEEE let this happen, we already pay them enough to take the damn exam and jump through all the dumb hoops, it's an endless debt cycle

Same. The better thing to do is just be a member of your respective camp (LAJ, LADC or criminal bar equivalents) and that way you can control where your money goes. LSBA should be nothing more than the admissions and CLE arm of the LASC.

I get way more mileage out of the BR Bar Assc. and I actually am not that active in it. Spot on about what the LSBA should be. Not a job creating bureaucracy.

Oh, this is great...
Just got this by email,
So close!
Should I counter with $3.50?

In keeping with the governing documents, we have preliminarily calculated the pro rata amount of your membership dues spent on lobbying this year to be no more than $3.00. Also as required, we are having this amount preliminarily verified by the Association’s auditors and are placing this sum in escrow. No later than 45 days from the deadline for receipt of written objections, the Board of Governors will determine whether to grant the refund or refer this matter to arbitration.

Yes, and I don't care what I spend on this-I'm that pissed off.
Posted on 5/5/20 at 10:04 am to AlxTgr
You would think they could show you the calculations. I may join in on this myself.
Posted on 5/5/20 at 10:05 am to AlxTgr
Maybe you can fight arbitration being that you were mandated to join the association and had no real chance to object to the forced arbitration language
