oh well, at least the Kenyan never gave people false hope about possible drugs during the swine flu

Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg News: Federal stockpile of N95 masks was depleted under Obama and never restocked

quote:

The national shortage of N95 respirator masks can be traced back to 2009 after the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, when the Obama administration was advised to replenish a national stockpile but did not, according to reports from Bloomberg News and the Los Angeles Times.

The Trump administration is scrambling to replenish a stockpile of protective medical gear for healthcare workers and patients, as the coronavirus sweeps across the nation. N95 respirator masks are one of the most needed medical supplies amid the outbreak.

The George W. Bush administration published the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza plan in 2005, which called on the federal government to distribute medical supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile governed by the Health and Human Services Department in the event of an outbreak.

In 2009, the H1N1 outbreak hit the United States, leading to 274,304 hospitalizations, 12,469 deaths, and a depletion of N95 respirator masks.

A federally backed task force and a safety equipment organization both recommended to the Obama administration that the stockpile be replenished of the 100 million masks used after the H1N1 outbreak, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Charles Johnson, president of the International Safety Equipment Association, said that advice was never heeded.

Doesn't matter, We (this Administration) should have checked on this, re-ordered/re-supplied whatever. Every time I've ever moved up the ladder I inherited someone elses mess and was responsible for it. Not an excuse, my wife is a nurse and their hospital is out or super low on N95 masks. It's bullshite that front liners don't have the supplies they need. I blame the hospitals too.

Yeah. We’re two weeks in. A hospital not having more than two weeks supply of PPE is a frigging joke. That’s not FedGov’s problem.

Trump has been president for 3 years when are you going to stop blaming Obama for everything? Trump should have been in that warehouse counting masks...

Well the problem is they're limiting who can use the masks. As of now only people working with patients who have tested positive can use them. As more tests are administered of course you have more positives. What I'm getting at is theses nurses could be working with positive patients and not know it. Damn near everybody on staff in the hospital should be wearing a mask at the very least. Just my opinion though.

This is a clear failure of both administrations. Obama's should have replenished after H1N1 Trump's should have seen the depleted stock and replenished it when he took office it's as simple as that.

Where the frick do they get the money from?

“The argument we’ve made for 20 years is that if we want to have prepared healthcare institutions, this has to be a societal responsibility, and that means a government responsibility.”

After 9/11, the federal Hospital Preparedness Program was created in 2002 to help hospitals plan for public health emergencies and terrorist attacks.

But as time passed, the program was steadily cut. In 2007, Congress trimmed $44 million from the program’s budget. In 2014, lawmakers cut $120 million.

Overall, money for the program has been slashed by about half since 2003, said John Auerbach, chief executive of the Trust for America’s Health.

Auerbach, who was Boston health commissioner for nine years, said he and other public health officials routinely pleaded with Congress to restore the spending.

He said lawmakers frequently offered the same response: “Do we still need that?” LINK

I mean, Obama sucks and all. But it's been 3+ years. If Trump were so competent, you figure he would have addressed this situation and sent some barbs Obama's way while doing so. Just being as bad as Obama was doesn't seem like a good look.

Easy without money?

Look, you are probably right because I am arguing from an emotional point of view with the wife's occupation and all. It just sucks that she even has to be in that position.Thank you for your input.
