So there are only a couple of reasonable possibilities here that I can see.
1. The story is true. Trump is not disseminating misinformation to gin up more support for the war, this really happened.
2. It's a complete (or partial...it could be greatly exaggerated) lie that the administration made up to persuade more Americans to feel sympathetically about the war efforts.
If you go in for #2, you really have no basis to trust Trump about anything or consider him anything but a member of the Deep State.
If you go in for #1, you really have no basis to claim that Iran was never a direct threat to Americans.
I personally feel that #1 is more plausible.
