Note this is primarily for STATE of UT income taxes, not federal.

quote:

Tax season is turning into a tax nightmare for many Utah families, especially those with more than two children, as they discover a significant jump in state income taxes.

quote:

So what happened? You could call it the perfect storm for Utah families: federal changes aren’t as impactful in Utah because of our large household sizes, charitable giving and high rates of homeownership.

For example, Congress doubled the standard deduction, but many Utah families were already receiving that same benefit by itemizing and deducting charitable giving and mortgage interest.

What’s more, Utah — a state with the largest average household size in the nation —was hit hard when the tax overhaul got rid of the $4,050 personal exemption, which a tax filer could claim for themselves, their spouse and each child.

Isn't this a Utah problem if it's Utah income taxes that are up?

Utah has given us McCain, Romney, Flake...… Fatty McCain, Greg Popovich.....

I'm not against Utah feeling a little discomfort from time to time.

Elections AND erections have consequences.

Didn’t see the fact that child tax credit was doubled, which makes up for loss of personal exemption in most cases.

I'll leave it to show my ignorance (or just screw up).

As an outsider looking in, I'd assume Utah should be showing a nice surplus; consequently they should be able to lower state rates too.

Correct?

That's what La. did with their windfall, well oops, never mind. JBE kept it.

But shouldn’t the media and the Dems be celebrating this and congratulating trump if true. They want Americans to pay more taxes. Why would they spin this as negative?

I paid less in taxes. If you paid more, you need to get a better CPA.

Can't folks exercise their religious freedoms freely?

The LDS religion has tenets about large family size.

Yeah. The extra 3Gs in my bank thanks to tax cuts is awesome. But keep believing straight up lies. The only folks that will feel real pain live in high income states controlled by your liberal friends. frick em. They need to get tax and spend politicians out of their state. If not, too bad.

Plus, you should be happy that wealthy people are being taxed at a higher rate.

I live in a state with no state income tax. I certainly didn’t get screwed.

The same reason they used George HW Bush's, "read my lips, no new taxes"

They all voted for the Bush tax increase and then used it against him in the 1992 election!
