"Every libertarian was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple"

That is a fairly common saying, but how it relates to libertarianism is beyond me.

quote:The quote is saying all libertarians are rich people who wrongfully think they earned their success.

I am not rich, therefore the quote collapses

that quote fits Republicans more than libertarians. it's a dumb quote though.

Nothing to explain. It's ridiculous

Substitute millennial for libertarian and you're there

here's all you need to know about libertarians
there are roughly 600,000 elected offices in the united states, that includes city, county, state and federal. 600,000! 55 are held by libertarians.
if libertarians were going to be a thing, they would have been a thing by now.

It means if you were lucky enough to be born into an upper middle class family with two good parents who send you to private school, you probably should consider those circumstances as part of the reason why you're probably more successful in life than a kid whose mom was a crack addict and whose dad is in prison.

FIFY
See how easy it is to say things like that?
There are rich and poor on both sides of the aisle. General statements like that are neither true nor defensible. I would be happy to debate this with you, if you would like.

Born in the US.
Typically white.
Typically raised in a middle to upper middle class family.
At least some college.
These are inherent (unearned) advantages most libertarians enjoy.
The saying is stupid, but there is a nugget of truth in it.

I doubt if it is original to Lip,,,Ive heard variations of it all my life...but basically it does apply to an awful lot of people on the right...not necessarily libertarians. Donald Trump is a great example...except he was born at home plate and thinks he hit a home run.
The only people who discount economic station in life are those whose station at birth was favorable. Anyone who sincerely believes that a white baby born into a middle class home with two loving, caring parents commited to one another and their family is not better off, from the beginning, than a black baby born into the same set of circumstances is simply refusing to accept facts.
I have a friend...a dear friend...who, from an early age that he would inherit a sizeable sum of money before he was 35 years old. There was never any doubt and it did eventually happen. He has always sincerely said that ALL babies born in the United States has the exact same opportunities and chances....that station, race or economics matters one bit. These things very well mean less in the US than most countries but they are not meaningless in the US.....and thus there are a great many people who are born on third base thinking they hit a triple....
I attended one of the most exclusive private schools (full academic scholarship...no way my blue collar Dad paid $10K a year for elementary school tuition in the 70's) in the SE from the third grade until I graduated...and I can't recount the number of times one of my classmates mentioned their being wealthy and others among us reminding them that their parents were wealthy but they didn't currently have a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out of. I actually knew trust fund babies as a child...weird world....

At one time many more of those black babies were born to intact black families.
Of course that was before the welfare state destroyed all of that.

I just finished season 7 last night. I really enjoyed the show. Franks gotta be one of my favorite TV characters of all time

Where would they be today without the welfare state?
I hear this all the time and it sounds logical....but where would any of us be without the welfare state? Times changed since the 30's....labor hasn't been nearly as necessary in the last 40 years as it was in the previous 40 year period.
Many people who make this argument discount the desperation that middle class and poor Americans experienced during the depression...and there was an answer to that desperation...one that has happened to every nation in the history of man which grew to forget about the poor...eventually they take the shite away from the rich. Without the new deal this was very likely to happen in the US....there was a growing movement of poor and middle class people who had their backs against the wall and were just about at the breaking point...meanwhile in Louisiana the Governor and soon to be Senator was selling the poor and middle class in that state a different idea...and FDR had the foresight and ability to convince enough of his cronies that their stranglehold was about to be loosened by a wave of poor, desperate people...and so they threw those people a bone and built the greatest middle class the world has ever known.....and welfare...things like food stamps and subsidized housing, are extensions of that bone. Take that bone away and you don't suddenly see full employment and intact familes...you see social unrest that has been brewing since the early 20's finally coming to a head....
