Was he a central character to the show where his absence is causing the ratings to sink? Did people quit watching in boycott of him? Or were the ratings falling off anyway without his fake hate crime?

I’m surprised they even got one lame duck season.
The show is expensive as hell and the ratings didn’t support it staying around. Then they dropped again in the wake of the Jussie hoax.

Howard got paid for the first film while RDJ got underpaid because he had a shaky history of relapses.
When he emerged as a huge star, they renegotiated the IM2 salaries and Howard wasn’t happy he was taking a pay cut to pay the star of the film.
There were also rumors that Howard was a dick during the filming of IM1 which didn’t help matters.

Howard bout his rep on the one highly acclaimed movie ... can’t remember the name, all star cast. Crash maybe? Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock, Howard, and whoever else which garnered him a lot of attention for Hustle & Flow like the next year maybe.
