You're quite upset by all of this.

It's not personal, it's just business.

Under normal circumstances, sure, but in this case your "managers and chain of command" are under as much scrutiny as every other worker. Everyone needs to justify their position.

And also, many many many private sector operations have internal and external auditors that comb through everything before the books are closed each year. If they have questions, you sure better answer them. This is no different.

Do government employees not receive email on their iPhone? As soon as blackberry came out I’ve never not had email on my phone. Honestly, do they only get emails on their laptop?
vast majority do not

I think he absolutely is an independent consultant, maybe I should have used that terminology. Here is the definition of an independent consultant. It is exactly what Musk is doing.
An independent consultant is a type of independent contractor who provides expert advice and solutions to organizations.

As far as what you say he has a conflict of interest, what company owner is not going to bring in a trusted resource to review his company's books.

I bet no one would show up if they received an email on Saturday stating that the office is closed on Monday.

Do you believe that every single government employee is sitting in a cubicle behind a computer screen?

People getting triggered over the emails is hilarious. I guess EDS is real now too.
No, Elon isn't going to read the replies. They're rooting out fake employees and people who don't even check their email.

I saw a few posts elsewhere last month about some agencies creating fake positions and filling them with fake employees to boost their budget requirements and jobs reports.
I blew it off at the time.. that's just crazy.. Until the email thing.

I saw something about this a couple of days ago.

This is another method to find this fraud. This also explains why many in charge want no one on their teams replying. They are hoping for a blanket non response so the fake employees keep going unnoticed for the money.

Then you are giving remote employees way too much rope.

I'm not, I can measure performance in ways other than, "give me a list of things you've accomplished". As should most other remote managers.

Exactly … I’m in the same boat. I have a weekly touch point with my employees to discuss their projects, ask if there are any obstacles that I can assist with and just open the communication channels. If their projects are on schedule and according to budget, they’re doing their job.

No. I do believe that it costs money to maintain emails, CRM, Microsoft products, etc. for every government employee. The government doesn't create all of this stuff themselves. They still have to buy technology from private sector companies. If 80% aren't even using this stuff, it needs to be cut.

Nice. You treat them like adults, especially if they are meeting their metrics.

This whole thing is laughable to me. I've been WFH for nearly a decade now and I've never had issues reporting my worth. I've also had to fill out similar notices for new leadership twice since I've been with my current company.

This treatment is something that isn't new to those of us in the real world.

It’s simple, Elon (and his computer science graduates) aren’t experts on anything related to government and the tasks performed by the plethora of different departments and employees, thus we get situations like this that make no sense and makes the world laugh at us.

It’s like hiring a very good plumber to assess a doctor. If you want to assess a doctor, you get someone who is actually an expert in the field to do it, else you’re just wasting your money.

Do you really think that consultants are "independent"? They are there to work on behalf of the company and its stated interests. If the two Bobs show up they are there to make sure everyone is preforming and not just making a paycheck.

So you admit that not every employee would have access or maintained access to their government email, not out of laziness but out of pure “not-needed” basis to do their job

But essentially a 48 hour suspense to report your workload on a non-duty day via an email you don’t have access to just to avoid being involuntarily resigned is completely fine?

It was shortsighted at best.

Maybe he should post another SpongeBob meme though

I can’t imagine the stress of someone on vacation worried that a tweet will lead to them losing their job. As unlikely as it is, it’ll be in the back of your mind.

Geez, I've been retired for a long time, but even back in the old days, we all had "out of office" automatic replies set up on our company emails. And every supplier we worked with did the same. Something like:

"I'll be out of the office, returning March 3rd. If you are in need of assistance before that date, please see my co-worker, Mr/Ms Jones @ company email bla-bla-blal"

That's pretty typical, no? Elon is gonna get that, and that will get filtered out and looked at later.

This isn't rocket science, and Elon has a team that can handle that, I'm sure his team will handle this just fine. No worries.

Phase ta-two will be, glad ur responsive, now what is it you exactly do here?
