EWE stated something to the effect of "the only way I can lose is if I am found in bed with a dead girl or live boy."

Then there was a picture of EWE acting like he was Jesus on the cross or something.

Is this accurate and isn't there a picture of him with his arm stretched out?

Yeah, I guess so.....I'm guessing that there are not a lot of political historians lurking around here.

This is an old on for the people that read THE LAST HAYRIDE and remember the hijinx of the EWE campaigns...

It was at a public event the media covered. It was published in the paper. It’s also been published in a Maginnis book. It caused a minor stir. But that event was based on satire, off the cuff remarks and a lot of sarcasm. Politicians on both sides gave and took plenty of hits and shots.

The first week in July at the Pentecostal camp in Tioga is THE PLACE TO BE and I'm glad you recognize that.

My personal EWE favorite quote....

Vote for the crook; it's important.

Yep. EWE was a convicted felon, and he still got 80+ thousand votes in his effort to win a Louisiana election. AND THEY STILL LET HIM RUN.

My personal EWE favorite memory:

I think this is in McGinnis’s book. He was at a campaign stop in Lafourche Parish, and some told him that he had audience captivated. He said that it did matter what he said that night. He could have read from the Sears catalog and still had their attention and votes.

If you are from Louisiana or if you are a transplant and you are interested in local politics you should read this book.

Also suggested reading:

and ,

I guess this is a starter pack for Louisiana politics.

Those books listed are good, but "The Earl of Louisiana" by the famous NY writer A.J. Liebling is my favorite.

It really gives an interesting outsider's take on Louisiana and the late '50s/early '60s political scene there.

There are some people who just have extraordinary charisma and likability. Generally that gift is accompanied with oratory and humor talent as well. Edwards was a very interesting person, especially re his religion. I would have loved to spent an evening on the front porch with him, going deep.
