WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to order a review of a law that has long protected Twitter, Facebook and Alphabet’s Google from being responsible for the material posted by their users, according to a draft executive order and a source familiar with the situation.
quote:
The order, a draft copy of which was seen by Reuters, could change before it is finalized. On Wednesday, officials said Trump will sign an executive order on social media companies on Thursday.
quote:
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
quote:
The executive order would require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to propose and clarify regulations under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a federal law largely exempting online platforms from legal liability for the material their users post. Such changes could expose tech companies to more lawsuits.
The order asks the FCC to examine whether actions related to the editing of content by social media companies should potentially lead to the platform forfeiting its protections under section 230.
quote:
It requires the agency to look at whether a social media platform uses deceptive policies to moderate content and if its policies are inconsistent with its terms of service.
quote:
The draft order also states that the White House Office of Digital Strategy will re-establish a tool to help citizens report cases of online censorship.
quote:
Called the White House Tech Bias Reporting Tool, it will collect complaints of online censorship and submit them to the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
It requires the FTC to then “consider taking action”, look into whether complaints violate the law, develop a report describing such complaints and make the report publicly available.
quote:
The draft order also requires the Attorney General to establish a working group including state attorneys general that will examine the enforcement of state laws that prohibit online platforms from engaging in unfair and deceptive acts.
quote:
The working group will also monitor or create watch-lists of users based on their interactions with content or other users.
quote:
Federal spending on online advertising will also be reviewed by U.S. government agencies to ensure there are no speech restrictions by the relevant platform.
quote:
It requires the head of each agency to report its findings to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, within 30 days of the date of this order.

Oh good, big government here to save the day from private companies. Damn those libs!

So in other words they need to choose to be either a platform or a publisher and not pretend to be a platform to the public while censoring like a publisher in private.

Actually quite the opposite.
These "private companies" are about to fall in line with other private companies and lose the silly protections that allowed them to become de facto arms of the Democrat Party....

They need to be ruled as publishers as long as they remain committed to picking winners and losers related to content.
If they don’t like it ban political content and move on.

Pretty much... sounds like they all have the option...

Anything he does will go straight to the 9th Circuit where Judge David Bernstein will immediately overturn. Between shitlibs and "Doh they private company they do what want" conservatards nothing will stick in our favor.

Good.
They've tried to straddle the fence long enough.

That would make sense in a nation of Anglo-Saxon common law tradition.... but that's not America. We live in "whatever Judge Bernstein says" country. And they will let these companies do what they want because they have power and you don't.

So a study.
he's learned. agency regulations can't just be overhauled without a proper process. this was a common issue early i his presidency

Private companies shouldn’t be the arbiters of truth, that’s the governments job!

You clearly have no understanding of what is happening here. Hope your dumb comment made you feel all good inside.

I'm not a lawyer but this looks like a big deal to me.
Just directing the FCC and AG to look into the possibility these companies are not compliant is a huge step.

Good. Trump supporting voices need to be heard on these platforms to call out Democrat lies. If Twitter, Facebook and YouTube/Google had their way they would only allow messages that comply with the Chinese Communists Party to be broadcast.

Government inspectors: "Your business claims to be selling Pizza, but you appear to be putting medications as toppings?"
DavidTheGnome: "Complimentary Xanax and Prozac with every cheese pizza."
Government: "Uh you need a legitimate prescription and a DEA license to dispense"
DavidTheGnome: "OMG! Big government! DONT TREAD ON MEH"
inb4wikitiger "this, but unironically"
