I’m not convinced either way. The virus lacks the genetic hallmarks of gain of function research, but it’s also a remarkably fit virus with respect to infectivity for one that resulted from a direct species jump. Now this may very well be selection bias (ie we only ever find out about the fit viruses because the ones that jump species but can’t spread effectively only infect a few people) but it’s an intriguing question.
I find my fields (Infectious Diseases and epidemiology) are pretty split on the question. Around half think it was an accidental lab leak, the other half think it resulted from a direct species jump. If I had to put money on it I’d still probably bet on natural origins but it’s definitely still up in the air.

Half think it was accidental, and half think is was a natural process? That leaves zero that believe it was intentionally released on the populace for some ulterior motive? Isn't weaponization (intentionality) a pillar of some research laboratories?

The number of people within the fields of ID, virology, epidemiology, etc. who believe it was intentionally released is so low as to be statistically insignificant. Those people exist but their numbers are washed out of the analysis simply as a matter of volume.

Sure, but releasing it into your own population isn’t. Moreover, if this virus was designed for the purposes of intentionally releasing it they did a really shitty job. The USSR developed viral and bacterial pathogens with mortality rates exceeding 90% in animal models and that was 40 years ago. And again, SARS-CoV2 lacks the typical hallmarks of a virus intentionally augmented by humans.
