For those that don't have an X account, it was an unladen Botswana flagged tanker that was trying to violate our blockade headed to Kharg Island. The vessel ignored repeated warnings to turn around so they sent a missile directly into the engine room.

I'm guessing someone convinced them that the US wouldn't follow through on it. Or that if they did they would somehow be able to drum up international anti-US sentiment as if the US actually gives a frick.

One of the claims by supporters of this stupid war is that it is to hurt China. The oil is still getting to China because we're not about to open fire on a Chinese flagged vessel.
