@markknoller

Near the end of his rally speech, Trump also offered praise for Civil War General Robert E. Lee, saying Lincoln almost developed "a phobia" about being unable to defeat him, until Gen. Ulysses Grant, who Trump noted had "a drinking problem," but is recognized as a great General.

Didn't Lincoln ask Lee to fight for the north and Lee turned him down?

Is it really controversial to say lee was a great general?

I watched that part of the speech, anyway, Trump was praising grant by saying he defeated "great" lee.

Lee is hardly a villain in American history. He was one of the great military minds.

It is amazing that somebody could be outraged over this. Trump was USING LEE'S GREATNESS to praise grant. That's it.

It's common knowledge Lincoln wanted Lee. He would have obliterated the South with their resources and manpower.

Indeed.

The biggest villain in the entire civil war will always be Abe Lincoln who was more than ok with letting half a million human beings die when there was no threat to americans and just to keep a ragtag band of states together and fix something that was already going to be made obsolete by industrialization and technology.

frick Lincoln. Best thing that ever crossed his mind was a scrap of metal.

The civil war was truly the birth of the monster that we know today as the American Federal government.

I just watched the clip. In no way is anything trump says outrageous.

He was in the end praising Grant (who was from Ohio)...saying he beat a "great" general in Lee.

Not sure why twitter is lit up.

Why is it bad to say Lee was a great general? He objectively was.

This is all factually correct, Lee kept crushing every general Lincoln illegally sent south till Grant.

The south would've won the war had General Lee let go of his distaste for guerrilla warfare and take the fight to the north.

But Lee was too honorable of a gentleman to do something like that as IIRC, he believed that war should be fought on an open battlefield and open seas and thus he lost against more firepower and manpower.

Mark Knoller is one of the most, if not the most non-partisan reporter there is.

He just tells it like as it actually happens and leaves his political bias out of it. He's what a reporter is supposed to be.

He's a great follow I recommend to this board if you have a twitter account and want to keep up with the daily happenings of the Trump Administration.

Well, his tactics and strategies are still studied to this day at the finest military institutes in the world.

Other than the part where his army killed American soldiers, of course.
