Worked on the design for a trail crossing a railroad a few years back. Took about two years of all the RR bureaucracy to get everything designed and approved but one of the big keys to it being approved was requiring the trail to zigzag before the crossing to force the user to be able to see up and down the track before crossing. They have had several pedestrians killed supposedly because of headphones.

Totally incongruent for an individual of His intellectual stature. Poor guy either had problems not known (suicide)...or He just made a bad mistake in a highly comfortable routine scenario. I pulled in front of an oncoming vehicle, right in my own driveway. Out in the country...stuff on my mind; thank God no one was hurt.

I work some of our railyards in my facility from time to time.
When I was new I was walking backwards looking up at a electrical run and almost got knocked by a train rolling behind me.
I had earmuffs on and they we're pushing from the other end. The brakes were off so it was free rolling. Those big frickers are quiet rolling if there is no resistance and its engine is pushing from the far end.
