The national median annual income for welders is about $51,000

That's because you could actually get hired while doing so.
So, today you can't get a job without a college degree???

To spend 1800 a month in daycare for a kid? Or to afford a house in a school district that’s full of culture

Do some jobs still exist that don't require a college degree? Yes.
But the overwhelming majority of jobs today require one, yes. Not only that, but a very large amount of jobs that still exist from back in the day that used to not require a college degree now do.
Even those that technically don't require all number of certifications that didn't exist 30 years ago which require at least 2 year technical school degrees to get and thousands of dollars in licensure.
The barriers to entry for the job market is MUCH higher than in the past.

Personally I think blanket blaming entire generations of people is misdirected anger. People in power are careful architects.
As someone who rails on boomers a lot, I agree with this. I think the anger comes from the perception(and often times reality) of boomers who refuse to accept that they made any mistakes politically and pretending that the plight of young people is no different than what they had to deal with

quote:Nothing in this world is free. Why do you think you need something free? Work for it and earn it.
You think becoming a welder is free in 2025?
quote:That's why they have shop class.
A high school student can just say "I'll be a welder!" and it will be so?
quote:bullshite.
It takes almost as much schooling to be a welder as it does to be an engineer.
quote:More whining and complaining. Lifes hard. Deal with it. Play the cards you've been dealt. Or go out back and take care of yourself
A trade school kid today pays more in tuition (adjusted for inflation) than it cost a boomer to go to college as an engineer back in the 1980's.
quote:Not really. Didn't say only, but it is an option. See my statement "Young people want everything, they want it NOW and they want someone else to provide and PAY for it." You seem to fit it quite well.
But even you must admit that military service as the only means of giving someone employable skills without starting at zero shows some pretty serious problems with our system right now, no?

There’s a reason people used to eat all this meatloaf and tuna casserole and potatoes and canned vegetables: They were poorer and trying to stretch their food budgets. But you and your spouse could definitely live like this today, if you wanted to.
Uhh
They ate this way because refrigeration and transportation aren’t what they are today

Young people and hard do not belong in the same sentence.
Young people today are as soft as puppy shite.

I agree with this. Blaming voters is often a waste of time. Most of these decisions were never voted on.
Accurate take.
Often times, younger people just want older folks to acknowledge that the game has changed. They want the older generations to notice that the conventional wisdom which worked for them no longer is applicable to the world youth are inhabiting. They want some sympathy, but are told to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" by people who simply did not face the same hurdles to doing so.
Every boomer I've ever met has some dumb story of "and I walked into the business, I walked up to the guy and said 'gimme a job! I want to work here!' and they did!" They have NO IDEA how difficult it is to get a job these days.

Have you priced meatloaf lately!? My mom's family were the poor kids on their block. Her father was a furniture salesman and her mom a part time bookeeper. They ate BRISKET! They ate meatloaf! They ate more meat with every meal than I do in a week!!!
I can't afford brisket! I can barely afford chicken!!!

quote:Growing up in the 70's, my parents had transportation and refrigeration. We still had a garden and canned vegetables when they came. My wife and I pay taxes on over 200k each year, we have ample transportation and refrigeration. We grow a huge garden, can and freeze dry vegetables.... But then, we're not lazy, we don't blame others for what we don't have and we don't expect others to provide for us.

Ask yourself if people have become more narcissistic since boomers took control.
