“Reciprocal. That means they do it to us and we do it to them,” Trump said in his April 2 speech. “Very simple. Can’t get any simpler than that.”

“Those listed numbers are simply not tariffs, but some other made-up measure based on a formulaic trade deficit calculation,” Kimberly Clausing, a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told us via email. “In almost every instance, countries’ true trade barriers are far, far lower.”
He fooled you guys badly.

You left wingers are beating the tariff drum to death and as usual are overplaying your hand. You'd think you guys would learn at some point but apparently not

The ones calling this example retarded don't realize that this is quite literally the formula from Trump's chart
It’s not retarded if your household income is based on products manufactured in your household and sold to businesses.
And if you want to draw parallels with the US, you’d also need to dwarf other households in your neighborhood with sales and purchasing.
So it’s a retarded equivalency.

Enjoy your day Rog. I have no interest in wasting my time arguing with you as we both know it will do zero good.

Why is it okay for other Countries to tariff us for years, if tariff's are so evil & bad?

I just want to hear one of you explain this idiotic chart rollout.
One person, thats all. No deflection.

It’s literally not. You are one stupid frick.
When I said literally, I didn't mean it in the 2020s vernacular. I meant it is literally listed on the Office of US Trade page and is 100% analogous to OP's example:
X is "things we sell"
M is "things we buy"
Phi and epsilon are constants that multiply to equal 1
So if you buy more from the grocery store than the grocery store buys from you, you are in a trade deficit. I'm assuming your grocery store doesn't buy anything from you so you're at a 100% deficit, and would charge a 50% tariff based on the "discount tariffs" column that followed

I don't care if we tariff. It would be better if it was based on something more than "you buy less of our goods than we buy of yours". Different economies have different strengths. If you want a factory job sewing shirts so bad open that factory, magabaw. You can find out why manufacturing moved overseas for a reason.

Nah, not worth wasting my time. People have tried to argue with you for the last few weeks when you've bled on every thread. Why would I waste my time trying to convince someone of something they have no intention of even entertaining?

I don’t care about the chart. It was stupid and knowing Trump it was probably some sort of troll job but yes it was stupid but that doesn’t mean he isn’t right about tariffs

You may want to give coherent arguments a try.
This one is not.

Trade policies destroyed nearly all of my local grocery stores. Did you mean to say Walmart?

I havent heard one single congruent statement about tariffs, but they arent reciprocal and that makes him wrong.
Sometimes he says they are punitive, then reciprocal, then national security. Depends on his mood.

Your local grocery store isn't going to take a beating from these tariffs. Walmart and Amazon might, but that's probably a good thing for the local grocery stores.

So what's your solution for the American industries that are low cost producers per good produced but are losing American and overseas market share because other countries are propping up their domestic industries of these goods?
Posted on 4/4/25 at 9:05 am to lowhound
I'm trying to drive home the point that a trade imbalance isn't inherently "bad". Why the hell would a small Asian country buy as much stuff from us (major consumer economy) as we would by from them (lower wage manufacturing country)?

I don’t care what he labels them IF they improve our trade imbalance with certain nations
Posted on 4/4/25 at 9:06 am to Rip Torn
Would you let him take a dump on you for a certain amount of money?

I
You realize trade deficits dont necessarily add to the debt, correct?
