Do you think being ideologically consistent is important?

I guess more broadly, is ideological consistency or pragmatism generally more important?

being ideologically consistent is synonymous with being principled and true to your beliefs and values.

Its not always true that people vote in their self interest first. Some vote for what they know is right and what supports the constitution.

As far a voter you have to be pragmatic

Politicians are generally not idealists themselves so you have to weigh their policy positions out by what is most important to you

Can't you be both? I'm conservative on most things, but you can also be conservative to a fault. When Rand Paul threw his hat in the ring to run for POTUS in 2016, he was guilty of being conservative to a fault. It got a bit cringe worthy actually. If anyone in the running said anything that wasn't 100% conservative, ran would jump at them saying, "but that's not conservative. You need to be conservative". And while i agree with most of what Rand says, there are instances where you may have to set aside your ideology and be practical. In a perfect world in bureaucrats eyes, once you are POTUS, everyone does what you say. In reality, you have to negotiate with the other side if you want something done.

Believe me, i'm not in favor of ever negotiating with the left, but i do understand it when it happens.

You could always subscribe to a political ideology that could be practically implemented

Yes. And this is the main reason I hate Rs and Ds. Their moral compasses blow in the fricking wind and it totally pisses me off. While I abhor Bernie Sanders, at least he is consistent and honest about what he is.

It’s what drew me towards Libertarianism. It’s philosophically and morally consistent. You may not like the answer, but it’s predictable and doesn’t change based off the whims of FB Karen and whatever the crisis of the day happens to be.

This is a false dichotomy. If you adhere to any preset ideology 100% of the time, you're a fool.

It can be part of your own personal ideological consistency to compromise at times on areas where you might disagree.

I guess I kind of conflict here. There are things I think are morally wrong that I don't think should be illegal. I wish more people, like everyone, could get on board with that idea.

It's pretty simple, there is no way that I can tell you what's best for you. I don't know you. Only you can make those decisions. I may not agree with you, but it's your decision.
