What do you make of Musk trying to bring hsr to California and Texas? (Serious)

For those that don't know, musk has promised donations to help start funding for the hsr of LA to Vegas and Dallas to Houston. Trump is on board with it.

As long as the California rails are one way heading west.

Only if it’s private. Public funds will mostly be stolen.

i don’t because it’ll just end up being a drain on tax payers. There’s no way to do this completely privately and have it work. If he could figure out a way, I would get behind it but I don’t see how.

A high volume, profitable HSR between hubs is not a bad way to take the stress off the air transit system. Certainly more efficient, can be electrified far in advance of anything air travel wise.

Let's take the use case of folks who frequently travel Dallas to Houston. I certainly wouldn't want to drive that regularly (say 1 to 2 times per month would start to get old) and flying almost doesn't seem worth the effort.

What I am against are these bullshite light (slow) rail systems which never turn a profit and it would have been a better use of the taxpayers' money to just buy all the light rail users Toyota Priuses (or Tesla 3s to update the adage). These are transparent attempts to reward family and friends of politicians with taxpayer money.

frick no. And as the only poster on this board to live where it’s currently being built all of you should share my informed opinion.

Musk is apparently looking big picture here. HSR between hubs with his Robotaxis taking you to and from the station at each end.

I’m voting for Lyle Lanley’s monorail proposal.

He’s in it for himself. I had no doubt about that. HSR is bullshite. He has to cross the San Gabriel Mountains, or tunnel through them to go from LA proper. Do you have any idea what the cost of that alone would be? Look at what it has cost so far and they haven’t touched any mountainous area yet. Just drive. It’s a few hours from LA and it’ll be cheaper in the long run.

High speed rail can work west of the Mississippi easier than the east, with the biggest issue being the government.

Yes of course. Big oil has ruined us from being able to have high speed rail

Of course. This is why I know he's not going to bring down inflation as much as he should. He loves to spend money on fancy, new, shiny things. He will assuredly put government money toward HSR.

We don't need HSR. Sounds like a ploy to put a bunch of truck drivers out of work to me and for the federal government to use eminent domain to soak up a lot of scenic land.

If we could get feasible, successful, private ICE trains like Europe, I’d be all for them.

Absolutely. Go live in Europe or Seoul for a couple months and see how much better life is with a functioning rail system.

Might want to research that a bit.

I would love to see high speed rail up the Atlantic seaboard, Boston to Miami and most spots in between. It’s a total pipe dream, though, as it would be a corrupt money pit boondoggle from the word go.

Most high speed rails lose money. And they suck up power like crazy. Also, you have to generate 3 units of power to deliver 1 unit to the train.
