Discuss: Why are the Japanese Honorable & The Chinese Aren't?

While WWII POWs may disagree - and there are complicated reasons for that found in the Bushido Code, and the perception on the part of their Japanese captors that POWs by definition were in violation of it - I have a general sense that the sense of honor in Japanese society is of much more importance than in China. The Chinese for the most part are sneak-thieves. You can see the difference in the writings of Tsun-Szu's Art of War and Miyamoto's The Way of Walking Alone.
It's interesting that two close neighbors with similar genetic backgrounds would be so different in that regard. Is the difference solely due to the Bushido code in Japan or is there something that goes beyond it?

First off comparing China with Japan is like comparing Germany with Russia. And honor is big in both societies, but go look up how honorable the Japanese were to the Chinese in the Rape of Nanking.

We kicked Japan's arse
We didn't kick China's arse

Well, the Chinese kind of gave us a pass fricking them out of 2 TRILLION after WWII so they should get bonus points for that.

The Japanese are clearly superior to the Chinese. The Godzilla movies are outstanding. I've never watched a decent flick made in China.

Hollywood.
We watch a film like the Last Samurai and impute it to the nation's culture at large.

The biggest difference IMHO is that Japan is small with no military whole China is roughly 1/6 of the world population with a huge military.
People let China slide on a lot of shite because they didn’t want to lose access to such a large market. Behavior that would have been corrected otherwise has now been institutionalized over there.

They were probably happy to not be under Japanese control anymore.

Opposite sides of the same coin, IMHO. Confucian roots, with heavy historical and political influences from the last 150 years.
Meiji Restoration (precipitated by Perry's opening) in Japan laid the groundwork for WWII (class stratification and obedience). Don't overread the Japanese morality. IMHO, it is more a case of doing what you are EXPECTED to do more than doing what is the right thing.
Mao's programs that required self-preservation destroyed a huge portion of whatever morality the Chinese had left after fallout from Opium Wars (which can be traced back to one British envoy's refusal to kowtow upon meeting the emperor).
Way too many layers to that onion to peel on this board.
For the simple-minded: It's all Whitey's fault.

Japan is also a lot more homogeneous than China. The Japs all speak Japanese. In China you've got 7 different languages.

To say nothing of the big moth and the flaming turtle movies.

The reason is because Japan attacked the US and was allied with the Nazis. They, like the Nazis, were saying all of thee same things about being the master Asian race and their "death before dishonor" code has led to some of the worst war crimes in modern history.
As for which of them is the aggressor, it's a pointless argument that goes back thousands of years and makes the endless France/Britain shite-fight look like a minor spat.
Short answer - Pearl Harbor

So, you're saying a dishonorable surprise attack on us by the Japanese makes us now view the Japanese as being MORE honorable than the Chinese?

You've obviously never seen the original Drunken Master
Seriously, despite all of our political differences and probably differences in general, you should definitely see that movie. It's Jackie Chan when he was young. The stunts he pulls off are incredible as are the fighting sequences

Japanese didn't seem to honorable in Nanking.
They were beyond brutal. Raping children, Raping women, forced incest between brothers and sisters & daughters and fathers, raping of babies, raping of pregnant women, slicing babies out of pregnant women, mass slaughters of civilians, burning people alive, beheading contests by Japanese soldiers where thousands of Chinese were killed down by the river. This is just a taste of what they did there.
Not even considering the Bataan death march, comfort women, etc... Japanese were worse than the Germans in many ways back in the 1930s & 1940s.
Chinese in general seem much more honorable over a very long length of time.

They were both savages IMO.

We could've just sent them an invoice for liberating them from Japanese occupation

When? Back in the fricking ice age? And Moscow is just slightly further from Berlin as Tokyo is from Beijing. They're connected by land.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Do you have any idea how diverse China's population is?
