They are real.

To ring in the new year, Seattle implemented a new tax on its residents: the dreaded sugary drink tax. Now, we know just how much the tax will hurt consumers.

Pricing labels at a Seattle Costco have garnered much attention because they show just how much soda and other sugary drinks now cost Seattle residents. A CBS News manager tweeted pictures showing the price increase of two drinks.

Last June, the Seattle city council passed a 1.75 cents per ounce tax on sugary drinks. The tax affects sodas, energy drinks, sports drinks, juice and other non-milk based products. Non-milk based drinks include many of those sold at Starbucks and other coffee shops. Diet drinks and those from small distributors are exempt from the tax.

Distributors are required to pay the tax. However, the added cost has been directly passed on to consumers in most cases.

The purpose of the tax, Seattle’s progressive leaders allege, is to help thwart people from purchasing the drinks. Much of the tax will be used to fund programs designed to educate young people on making healthy choices.

Do other U.S. cities have a similar tax?
Yes. In 2015, Berkeley, California, became the first U.S. city to implement a sugary drink tax, otherwise known as the “soda tax.”

Many of America’s most progressive cities and municipalities followed suit, including:

Philadelphia
San Francisco and Oakland
Portland, Oregon
Albany, New York
Boulder, Colorado
Cook County, Illinois, where the city of Chicago is located
Maryland and Virginia also levy a statewide soda tax.

in portland they charge a 10cent tax per plastic bottle. "recycling fee" even though everyone up here recycles. ya can get your money back with store credit if you bring the bottles back.

so if i want my ransom money i'll have to bring all those bottles back to a nasty arse recycling machine in front of the store and get my "credit". frick that.

To me that just hurt the sellers of product. Manufacturers don’t care as long as the seller buys at their cost. Live in a liberal world, live with stupid.

When the seller keeps a lower inventory because the product is not moving, though...

When half the country can see through your propaganda, you have to find ways to force them to do as you want. The sad part is that there are so many dumbasses that actually think this is acceptable.

They look at sugar as bad, yet they allow pot? Not that I'm a big anti pot person, but this doesn't make common sense at all.

the product is not moving

In the case of a city doing this, that’s exactly what I see happening. Say your family drinks a case a week of whatever soft drinks they enjoy. That’s about $5 extra, and might be worth driving out of the jurisdiction to get the product without the tax.

So vendors immediately outside the city move a little less than double the volume of the vendors inside the city.

Question: Does the tax apply to products like Diet Coke, Coke Zero, etc?

Edit: I got the tax amount wrong initially. Thought the $7.50 was per 12-pack.

Your avatar reminded me of a conversation.

"They will never ban cigs on planes."
"Well fine but they will never ban cigs at work."
'Damn if they will ban smoking at my cigar shop in the mall."

Ban sugar RFK and save lives and medical cost. If you care I mean.

The real question is if the tax is exempt for food stamps? If you're only taxing people who are actually paying for it, I would lose my mind.

Why do they stop at sugah watah? What about:

Sugar
Honey
Agave
Wheat flour
Bread
Raisins
Dates
Vegetable oil
Soybean oil
Peanut oil
Canola oil

Everything else that either has a high glycemic load or shitty oils?

I want the government to tell me how to eat, because they've done such a great job with that and everything else so far!!
