It's called a forensic image. The DOJ has a whole protocol of how the forensic image is taken and how a Digital Forensic Analysis is conducted. It is standard procedure. The JOJ/FBI doesn't go out and collect all of the physical servers. Give me A break.

This. They use “meddling in our election” as if it is a term of art yet never define it. Same with “interfering in our democracy”. Both phrases make me cringe. Nothing by platitudes that have become typical of our political discourse

Phishing a private organization, and spreading fake social media articles are not “meddling in an election”. If they are, there are dozens and dozens of domestic groups and individuals who are guilty of the same act. As there would be in any society that encourages the free flow of information, regardless of its validity. The onus is on the individual to verify the information they consume.

Whether they affected the election results doesn’t change the seriousness of the aggression.

To your question, it appears they were seeking negative info on Clinton in order to help Trump’s campaign. Plus using false websites and identities to spread phony info on social media.

I just wonder how upset the prog/DEM/MSM cabal would be if the Russians and succeeded in hacking into the RNC server and reveals some chicanery by Trump is securing the primary over Cruz, for example. Say something like a payoff to someone, or losing ballots.
