You need a political reference so there’s no other way.

The coach recruiting me promised he'd take care of it for me, so there are other ways.

If JBE was a stellar high school student with "A" grades across the board, lots of extra-curricular activities, including earning a "Letter" for one or more Varsity sports, he would have been a strong candidate for West Point.

The best "political connection" that I know of would be to have a father or grand-father who went to West Point and retired as a Major General or above.

I suppose that if Dad or Mom are career US Senators with 20 or more years in the Senate, that kind of pull would also work.

You need to calm yourself with the tireless bashing over pointless shite. Yes he likely leveraged political connection to get into West Point. It takes political connections to get into the Service Academies.

You have to get nominated by a congressman from your home state in order to get into any of the service academies. So the answer is 100% yes.

Actually that's not true, and I am not referring to being an athlete.

Well his Daddy worked for EWE before becoming Sheriff and his family got their land from the King of France.

Even with a congressional nomination, you still have to pass academic, medical, and physical requirements. It's called being "triple qualified". Until you pass these, the nomination is a moot point, and there are many more nominations granted than cadets admitted.

Athletes get help on the academics, but I'm pretty sure nobody gets in with just political connections (unless they are literally something like Presidential level, and even that I would doubt).

ETA: Corrected triple-qualified meaning.

Frank Edwards Jr was pretty powerful in the Louisiana democrat party. I would not be shocked he pulled a few strings to get JBE an appointment.

Not quite. One of his ancestors is Daniel Edwards who was a colonel that fought alongside Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. He was also a commander in the West Florida Republic rebellion in 1810.

This Daniel Edwards' (as in not JBE's brother) father was Morgan Edwards who moved to Louisiana from Virginia. He died in Madisonville sometime in 1799 but had moved there I'd guess in the 1770s when Louisiana was still a Spanish colony.

There are a shite load for athletics (female and male) and various types of diversity, then you have a large group that come out of the prep schools. And the appointments for merit and politics are about equal depends on the Congress person and their interest in the appointments.

Dumbass, that's how it works. West Point does not necessarily recommend you. a politician recommends you. Granted you do have certain thresholds to meet like grades and other quantitative and qualitative things, but in the end a letter from a Congressman or a US Senator goes a loooooooooong way

FFS, IB - his father was the sheriff and was in Edwin Edwards' inner circle.

You can't do that math yourself? Every Rep and Senator get an annual nomination.

It was 1984 - so that was Richard Baker as their U.S. Rep and unlikely to do a favor for the Dems. Frank was EWE's Assistant Commissioner of Administration at the time. So, either he or EWE on John Bel's behalf probably called Russell Long and that was it.

Now, JBE was the valedictorian so I don't doubt his academic qualifications, but politics is nothing for a kid as juiced in as that.

Actually it was Henson Moore.

From what I understand from a West Point friend, he was a very good athlete as well. It was a good appointment. He would not have gotten in if he did not meet the physical qualifications as well
