Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday that the state would replace the "outdated" Florida Standards Assessment with a progress monitoring system that periodically evaluates student performance.

“Florida’s education focus should be students’ growth and how we restore the conversation between parents and teachers in support of students’ growth,” DeSantis said in a press release about the change.

The new proposed system would include three shorter tests in the fall, winter and spring in an effort to assess students in "real-time" rather than with a single, longer exam. The new program will require 75 percent less testing time than the FSA testing model, according to the governor's announcement on Tuesday morning.

"We believe that having results monitored and measured is very, very important. But we also think that the FSA is outmoded at this point and that we need to move forward with a more, I'd say, nimble and effective approach," DeSantis said at Doral Academy Preparatory School on Tuesday.

You mean making teachers spend all year teaching to one standardized test above all other concerns isn't generating brilliant graduates?

DeSantis leading the way again!

They are pissed right now because a Republican just did what they have advocated for. They now have to figure out how to support standardized tests.

Brilliant way to force the unions to support the longer standardized testing.

Standardized testing is a racket because it is a monopoly. ETS owns all (ACT,SAT,LEAP,etc.) all of this crap. Our children's education is being ripped off by this manure and someone(s) is making large bank off of it. The idea of standardized testing was to determine where a child had a weakness and to be able to improve in that area with extra study. Now it has been perverted into a test to determine if that child is able to move to the next grade. Teachers teach the test in order to keep from receiving poor marks on their evaluations because too many students did not score high enough to pass to the next grade. Also in Louisiana I believe that that a child only has to score a 35 to be considered as "average". This is a catastrophe.

What state is this?

So if all the kids in the class don’t learn, the teacher shouldn’t get a bad evaluation?

Yes!!!! Stop letting Google/Microsoft data mining our kids and determining our curriculum. No tests means states don’t have to teach the commie curriculum that teaches to the test.

Teachers' Unions have been against standardized testing for years. It's going to be fun watching them do a 180 on this topic.

They're perpetually pissed.

As a matter of course regarding almost EVERY political issue I look to see if the teacher's union(s) support it. If so, I automatically know I'm against it. Most times without even having to dig deep in to the issue.

The OP title wasn’t accurate but you should probably work on your reading comprehension skills. He’s killing the FSA, not all standardized testing.

No, they like saying that they hate standardized testing.

If most teachers had to actually teach concepts rather than teach what a test tells them to, they';d leave the profession.

Its a great idea!
