Top lawmakers fear the two parties may become so entrenched that the shutdown could drag on for days.

Washington began its third full day of the federal government shutdown on Monday without any clear plan to dig itself out of its self-inflicted mess.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has teed up a vote for noon Monday that would re-open the government through Feb. 8. He pledged Monday on the Senate floor that as long as the government remains open he will proceed to an immigration debate with a "fair" amendment process and a debate that will have a "level playing field."

But so far, that doesn’t appear to be enough to persuade Senate Democrats to break the spending impasse.

"The Senate cannot make progress on any of these crucial matters until the government is reopened. We need to move forward, and the first step, the very first step, is ending the shutdown," McConnell said.

quote:

Democrats, feeling burned about the House neglecting the Senate’s immigration bill in 2013, want a more ironclad commitment from GOP leaders to take up a legislative fix to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which has given legal protections to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants.

But it's looking unlikely that Democrats will get one, at least for now.

There should be some form of Presidential EO based on National Security that orders payment to the Military. Trump ought to pull the trigger and take it to the Dems in the SOTU Speech.

Well, I'm impressed that apparently McConnell didn't fold like a cheap tent.

He needs to go nuclear and get the gov't reopened. There is no excuse for allowing another party hold the gov't hostage just because you don't wish to break with some archaic senate rule that is not written in the constitution. In fact, I would argue that its not in the constitution because the framers had no intention of allowing any party the power to shut down the business of the people.

Or McConnell could just allow a vote on the McCaskill bill that does just that. He won’t though because Trump and the Republicans are intentionally using military pay as a political football.

Honest question. Did you say also say this when Cruz lead a government shutdown demanding that Obamacare be defunded?

Democrats are bent on shooting themselves in the foot. They are holding everything up to protect illegal aliens.

That's rich. Can we at least have a debate on whose political football should have the priority in this particular standoff?

1.) US military pay (Republicans)
2.) Illegal aliens (Democrats)

I find it hilarious that the Dems are blaming Republicans for the 2013 immigration failure.

IIRC, Obama tried to frick Boehner and blew the agreement. And while they were trying to renegotiate, Cantor got blown out in his primary and it killed all GOP support for the bill

If Obama didn’t get greedy, they would have pushed the change through.

Well, back then, the dems labeled the repubs as cause for the shut down. They no longer have power, so they now take blame for the shutdown. Perks of winning, I guess.

That argument wouldn't hold water. Unlimited debate was a feature of both houses of Congress since their inception. The limiting of debate is a relatively new development in the republic. It doesn't mean the rules can't or shouldn't be changed, however, as was done in the house in 1841.

I wouldn't be surprised if this lasted until the SOTU address where Trump unveils some damning information about the Democrats that will force them to yield to try to save some face.

This shutdown has been very dull so far. Can’t even tell the government is closed to be honest.

True, TP...but the point has been made and the Dems are now on Record as choosing the security of Illegals over that of our Military. Time to wrap it up and move to the next battle.
