I really didn't become politically aware until I was in my late 30's. I was busy making a life, building a family. Yes, I SHOULD have seen the importance of politics to my goals of a good life and family, but it just was a small part of my world. I'm college educated - above average intelligence per standardized testing.

We have a very ignorant electorate. People who are easily led by "my tribe vs your tribe" politics. Black vs white, rich vs. poor - division is the source of their power. I understand that Trump is a populist, but he's a populist with policies that make life better for all Americans. I don't care about his mean tweets. He scares the shite out of N. Korea, Russia and China - all the while he did not start or join a war in his 4 years of president. He negotiated the best trade deals we ever had. He worked hard to close the border to illegal immigratiion. He's not the only one who can do this, but right now, he's the only one who has a chance of winning an election.

If you want to be a citizen of this country, you have to pass a civics exam. I know it will never happen, but I wish that somewhere in the constitution there was a requirement to vote - that said you had to pass a civics exam, understand the basic princiles of the Constitution and what makes the US different from all the other countries. Yes, Jim Crow rhetoric will be everywhere. But having an EDUCATED electorate means you have fewer sheep and more people who understand exactly what is going on.

If you want universal suffrage, then you have no business complaining about our elections having become an appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Same with liberalism (classic)

You need a society of intelligent, independent yet cooperative people.

Democracy is mob rule. We are a constitutional republic, and as such your point stands.

That's why the USA was NOT established as a democracy.

Executive - elected by Electoral College*
Legislative - only HOR was directly elected (and only by landowning males)
Judicial - appointed by Executive and confirmed by Senate (*which at the time were appointed by the states [i.e., representing the interests of the states/state governments).

Universal suffrage, the Civil War (and the rise of the Imperial Executive) and the 17th Amendment completely destroyed that structure.

Thank you for getting this correct! The Founding Fathers went through great lengths to protect the rights of the individual…we have multiple layers of removal from a Democracy. I fail to understand why this is so hard to understand.

nation of idiots. look at all those on the street interviews.

universities and social media have brainwashed the sheeple.

all should know about politics in their early 20's, late 20's at the latest. parents have failed the nation. i know 14 year olds who know more about politics and policies than these moronic 20 and 30 somethings. yes they were taught by their parents but still better than the idiots in universities.

oh and ronbots will melt reading these facts about trump.

Of course, that's why they got control of "education."

Granted, as well, they want many people that come here that are illiterate.

Voting shouldn't be an inalienable right. It should be an inalienable privilege, with yearly competency tests that change every year.

Cue the allegedly well-meaning white liberals to howl in protest at the idea because at their core, they earnestly believe that non-whites are neither smart enough nor capable enough to pass such a test.

You are so spot on... ANd that is what truly frustrates me with celebrities... Like LEBron, Madonna, Colbert and others. These are wealthy people telling kids with no money and who they have absolutely nothing in common with, telling them how to vote. And the youth believe them.

Senators voted into office by the State legislatures until 1913.

1913 was a really shitty year in this country.

Repeal the 17th.
Repeal the 24th.

That’s why the framers only wanted land owners to vote. They would be appalled that every idiot could vote.

Also saw a stat that the only group in this country that overwhelmingly votes for democrats are single women.

Universal suffrage is killing us.

The founders envisioned a bunch of intelligent, industrious, wealthy landowners doing the majority of the voting. That might have been their biggest failure. Lincoln finished us off.

I truly believe that going to the popular election of senators was the worst mistake we ever made and is directly responsible for the massive growth of government.

I see a lot of comments like that in here and it’s wrong. The US isn’t a PURE democracy but it’s still a representative democracy. And now, it goes beyond just votes. With social media everyone has a platform and a lot of idiots stand out on that platform, and influence other voters more than they ever have in the past.
