Just now on local cbs Atlanta news.

Delta has about 14K pilots now and says they will have 7K too many by end of summer.

Interview with pixelated flight attendant said they have been told their fates will be revealed within 3 months, said they are expecting “massive” layoffs. Delta has about 25K flight attendants.

777 is more expensive to fly and maintain than the A330 and A350 so they are being retired this year.

I will miss the 777, my favorite plane to fly long haul. It just felt more solid, roomier, and more powerful than the A330. It was a beast of a plane.

Luv the triple 7. Too bad. 787 is pretty decent though, and I like it more.

Good God, man! How long since you've flown? They're all in their late 50's and 60's now.

I think the lost jobs might have been the weightier part of the OP.

Interesting. My good friend has been a pilot for Delta for quite some time. Just hope that he doesn't get tapped in a possible downsizing.

I'll throw a handful of quarters on the stage for Blanch if she's shaking those saggy arse deflated dugs.

Some of those 777s Delta is retiring are still young ish themselves. The 200LR 777s they have were delivered to airline back in 2009 so they have like 15-20 years left of flying on them, especially if they're well taken care of and properly maintained.

I think the US Air Force should buy a couple of those 777s and refurbish them to serve as Air Force Two for the Vice President, First Lady and some cabinet members.

They all use a narrow body 757 for ultra long haul international travel which requires multiple fuel stops when they're not flying with the President on Air Force One and ultra long haul international travel is not what the 757 was designed for with a range of 5,500 to 6,000 miles depending on the payload.

The 777-200LR has a range of 10,000 to 12,000 miles meaning it can fly virtually anywhere in the world nonstop.

Like say the Vice President needs to go Singapore for a summit to represent the President there, the current 757 would have to make two fuel stops in Alaska and South Korea before finally getting to Singapore. The 777-200LR with its massive range would completely eliminate those two stops.

Major bailout of Airlines and Delta is cutting their pilot numbers in half, and ultimately flight attendants, ground crew, mechanics, etc.

Does this mean a massive scale back in operations?

Cutting half their pilots and a significant number of support personnel isn’t simply a case of “yeah, we like the other jets better.” Seems to be a symptom of “we have too many routes and we need to dump a lot of unprofitable ones.”
