The US is actually kind of an oddity in our constant "displays of patriotism" considering we're neither subjugated by anyone else nor are we an authoritarian dictatorship. From what I've been told, it actually unnerves foreign tourists who aren't used to it.

Back when I first met my wife at Delta, there were still monthly weigh-ins. Some of the management in Inflight (flight attendant division) in the 90’s I worked with were not allowed to be married or even “have a boyfriend” while they were flying.
