Reason I post this is I was discussing Trump's Mt. Rushmore speech with some friends, and I got the impression they didn't understand what he was talking about when he says "leftists."

At this point, politically and philosophically, what does "leftist" mean?

Trying to get back to basics.

Seriously? Define The Left? Like back to the French Revolution? Is this not self -evident for anybody who is culturally literate and has even the most minimal intellectual curiosity?

Leftists are anyone who supports Collectivism over Liberalism.

If they are politically active, they are inherently Authoritarian.

They are probably 40-60% of Democrats and > 75% of Green Party voters.

American leftists, in modern parlance, fall into 2 broad camps (with most in the latter camp falling in the former as well, so significant 1-way overlap) - those who believe we can enforce equality of outcomes, regardless of individual merit or circumstances and those who believe that America is irredeemably evil because of slavery and treatment of indigenous/minority groups even after the abolishment of slavery.

Classic liberals would form the left boundary of the moderate band. You are probably closer to classic liberal than leftist, but because of tribalism you often find yourself defending or trying to explain your allies' actions further to the left. Traditional conservatives form the right boundary of the moderate band and there are few in public life or with any real influence further to the right than that, at least on policy. Certainly no Republican leader like Trump, McConnell, Cruz, Graham, Grassley is "far right".

The Democrat caucus is ate up with those well to the left of classic liberal. "Classic liberalism" doesn't include speech codes, cancel culture, anything totalitarian that the modern American left has become.

The authoritarian, racist, dogmatic strain of liberals.

Basically the other side of the coin from the alt-right.

The leftist is oriented toward large-scale collectivism. He emphasizes the duty of the individual to serve society and the duty of society to take care of the individual. He has a negative attitude toward individualism. He often takes a moralistic tone. He tends to be for gun control, for sex education and other psychologically “enlightened” educational methods, for social planning, for affirmative action, for multiculturalism. He tends to identify with victims. He tends to be against competition and against violence, but he often finds excuses for those leftists who do commit violence. He is fond of using the common catch- phrases of the left, like “racism,” “sexism,” “homophobia,” “capitalism,” “imperialism,” “neocolonialism,” “genocide,” “social change,” “social justice,” “social responsibility.”

I’d go a little higher than 40-60%. Democrats today are more like 70-90%.

It is.

The guy's overall premise was a bit out there (to say the least), and his means of forcing the change in society was literally INSANE, but his defining of leftist and leftism might be the most comprehensive and accurate representation I've ever read

Trey - we're probably going to need a thread where we define "the alt-right" - because I only see it as a smear. When guys relatively diverse (and definitely not racist) as Joe Rogan, Dave Rubin and Ben Shapiro all get lumped in there, I feel like the proggies just label anyone relatively young and conservative (which Rogan isn't even that - he's a left-leaning libertarian with more in common with Bernie Sanders on policy than Trump, possibly excepting free speech and guns) as alt-right.

I've seen the smear at folks like Stacy Dash - I suspect folks at HuffPo, MSNBC and other progressive outlets would label the entire #BLEXIT movement (including The Right Brothers) as alt-right.

So, at this point, I know what they think it means (white racist/supremacist), but with a brush that broad, it means nothing. Nobody with any influence on the right is openly selling white supremacy/racism. Not even the "Proud Boys", who boast blacks as members now.

What am I missing?

A leftist to me, politically speaking, is someone I worry about fricking up the status quo of the nation. A fundamentalist transformer so to say. Carter and Clinton weren't leftists imo. Johnson, Obama and Biden, you bet.
